The Polk County Historical
Museum has added a 1870 to
1880 pump organ to its collec
tion recently, museum director
Richard Cannon has announced.
The 12-stop organ was
donated by Charlotte Fowler of
Fox Den Farm in Columbus.
Cannon has traced its owner
ship back to the 1920s. Every
one who remembers the organ
says it was originally owned by
a black church in Polk County,
and Cannon is trying to trace its
ownership.
The pump organ was made in
Boston by Smith-American
Organ Co. with a fine, carved
walnut cabinet, and two candle
holders to light the music.
If you would like to see
the organ, or think you know
anything more about its origins,
call or visit the museum any

will be open Super Saturday

Weather Delays
School Construction
Initial site preparation for the
new Polk County High School
is 64 days behind because of
winter rains, but the job should
be completed in 30 days. Bob
Myers of GMC Management
firm told the Board of Educa
tion Monday.
Perry Alexander Co. has
requested a 61-day extension
for the site preparation project,
but the company has added
extra manpower and expects to
be finished in 30 days, Myers
said.
Excavation for the main high
school building has begun and
temporary water and electricity
has been provided to the site,
Myers reported. Construction is
expected to begin at the field
house in the next 30 days, he
said.
The Building and Finishes
Contractor has asked for a
28-day extension, but GMK
thought 14 days was reasonable,
Myers said.
The new high school project
is expected to be finished June
29, 1992, Myers said.
Soil analysis is now underway
tor the Saluda School Project,
Myers told the board. A pro
posed bid date has been set for
mid-April, he said.
GMC has scheduled a meet
ing with architect John Cort to
go Through the educational spe
cifications and look at the Polk
Central building for renovating
into an elementary and middle
school, Myers reported.
