We mentioned last week a quirk of nature found by Dentus Chapman - a board with a knot resembling a monkey's face. Well Ernest Kellogg dropped by after that to show off an equally odd board. His was cut from one of the biggest Sumac trees in central Wisconsin in 1962 and was a Christmas present from his father. The knotty wood portrays a bulldog face, and recalls Kellogg’s boyhood days. Children in grades one through nine in Polk County began taking the California Achievement Tests Monday morning. Testing will continue all week. Analysis of the results will continue for years. Some radio listeners have called to say they are unhappy with the change in format at WSPA-FM. C. 28782 Jones Listed In Guarded Condition Jeffrey Jones, 18, of Tryon, was still in the Intensive Care Unit at Rutherford Hospital Monday, listed in guarded con dition. A hospital spokesman said his condition was unchanged from the previous day. Jones was the passenger in a Chevrolet pick-up truck last Wednesday when the truck struck a tree. The driver, Charles Bryan Lookadoo, also 18 and of Tryon, was killed instantly. The state trooper who inves tigated the accident said Friday that Jones was to be moved by helicopter to Charlotte. But his condition was apparently such that doctors chose not to move him. First Women's Soccer Team Polk County will field a new sport this spring with women's soccer. A loyal group of young women began practicing Feb. 11. This group includes Co Captains Katie Malone and Catherine Raftopoulou, Eliza beth Barns, Gretchen Brooks, Wendy Helton, Vida Holcomb, Nikki Hulst, Amy Ingram, Kristan Johnson, Jennifer Owens, Angie Rogers, Kelly Sparks, Dawn Spivey, Jamie Taylor, Amber Cole and Rhonda Burnett. Few of these girls have seen (Continued On Back Page) TUESDAY, MARCH 19,1991 4-H Entertains Saturday Night The 4-11 Entertains Talent Show and Fashion Revue will be presented on stage at the Tryon Elementary School Aud itorium at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 23rd. It will be an eve ning of fun for the entire family. Admission of free. Ilie public is invited to attend and support 4-H youth. 4-H is delighted to have Krista Cantrell directing the 4-II Entertains. The theme this year is "America the Beautiful". Tim Ballew, Master of Cere monies, will be introducing the twenty talent acts. 4-H'ers will entertain you with comedy, club skits, vocal and instrumental selections. Beth Wolfe, as the 1990 4-H Entertains "Best of Show" will be the guest per former. She will be demonstrat ing her talents in clogging. First, second and third places in all grade categories (K-4, 5-8 and 9-12) will receive rib bons. The "Best of Show" is selected from the blue ribbon winners. This top awardee will receive a trophy. The top per formers, those receiving the highest scores and nine years of age or older, will represent Polk County in District competition. The 4-H Spirit Award will be presented to an individual(s) who demonstrates a "Winning Spirit". 6 n 4- ?^ rs P erf °nning include the following: Heather Aley Samantha Baynard, Justin (Continued On Back Page) • 20c Per Copy Winter Athletes Honored at Banquet The members of the men's and women's basketball teams, men's and women's indoor track teams, the wrestling team, and the cheerleading squads for basketball were the guests of the Polk County Schools Ath letic Department at the winter sports banquet. The banquet was held on March 13 at 7 p.m. at the Tryon Youth Center. The banquet was prepared by Mrs. Sarah Edwards, Child Nutrition Director for the Polk County Schools, and Mrs. Melissa Allwood who is the food service manager at Tryon Elementary School. After the meal which consisted of a tossed salad, hamburger steak, baked potato, rolls and cobbler, each squad was individually recognized by their respective coaches and presented their certificates of participation. A number of studcnt/athletes were paid special recognition by their teams as they received various awards given by the teams for outstanding perfor mances: Women's Jr. Varsity Basketball Most Valuable Player - Minda Howze; Coaches Award - Amber Cole; Coaches Award - Blythe Edwards.
