Department of Transportation is seeking bids from contractors interested in building portions of N.C. 74 in Polk County. Bids will be opened April 16th for grading, draining and structures contracts for 6.35 miles of N.C. 74 from Beulah, which is located east of Mill Spring, west to the Broad River in Rutherford County. Contracts remaining to be put out for bid are the section from Hwy. 108, where N.C. 74 now terminates, to Beulah. Jones, who was critically injured in an automobile accident last week, is out of intensive care and is listed in stable condition. 28 Pages Today 20C Per Copy Block House Race Card Encouraged by the approach of springtime, the Tryon Riding & Hunt Club this week trotted out the race card for the 45th renewal of the Block House Steeplechase to be run on Sat urday, April 20. This year's race meeting will again feature the famed Block House Steeplechase at two and one-half miles, and carrying a purse of $20,000. At two miles and three furlongs is the NCNB, a race for maidens, or non winners, offering an enlarged purse of $10,000. This steeple chase, nearly as old as the Block House, is run as a memorial to Carter P. Brown, the man who brought hunt racing-and almost everything else connected to horses-to Tryon. Also at 2-3/8 miles arc the Doncaster, a conditioned claimer with a purse of $7,500 and the Hunting Country Cup, a maiden claimer for $5,000. Sponsored by the ERA Walker Agency and Ridgewood Farm, the Hunting Country is a memorial to Dr. Jack Bradshaw, a long-time chairman of the race meeting. The Doncaster, named for its sponsor, the well known apparel manufacturer, as well as a famous race in England, was once a race for amateur riders.
