The weather Wednesday: high
74, low 38, hum. 62 percent.
Several people have asked when
the time will switch back to
Daylight Savings Time.
According to The World Alma
nac, we will move our clocks
ahead one hour at 2 a.m. on the
first Sunday in April - April 7.
Of course, if you don't want to
get up then you can do it before
you go to bed.
Success has brought Hospice
of Polk County a critical chal
lenge: they have more patients
than volunteers right now. A
training course for new volun
teers will start very soon. If you
might be able to help out, call
Hospice at 859-2270.
A "green" idea for this
weekend: help turn Stearns Park
green. There will be a shrub
planting at Stearns Park at 10
a.m. Saturday. Anyone inter
ested in helping with the project
is asked to bring a shovel and
some energy. In the event of
rain, the work day will be
rescheduled.
The Chestnut Brass Company
returns to Tryon for a Tryon
Concert Association perfor
mance tonight at the Tryon Fine
Arts Center.

Because of an increase in
patient volume to three times
normal, the Hospice staff and
volunteers arc stretched to the
limit.
To increase our crew of
volunteers, a training course
will be started as soon as pos
sible, probably early April. The
course will be given in six half-
day sessions, probably morn
ings.
If you or someone you know
might be able to help out, please
call Hospice at 859-2270 or tell
any Hospice nurse or board
member that you know.

Block House
Race Card
Encouraged by the approach
of springtime, the Tryon Riding
& Hunt Club this week trotted
out the race card for the 45th
renewal of the Block House
Steeplechase to be run on Sat
urday, April 20.
This year's race meeting will
again feature the famed Block
House Steeplechase at two and
one-half miles, and carrying a
purse of $20,000. At two miles
and three furlongs is the NCNB,
a race for maidens, or non
winners, offering an enlarged
purse of $10,000. This steeple
chase, nearly as old as the
Block House, is run as a
memorial to Carter P. Brown,
the man who brought hunt
racing-and almost everything
else connected to horses-to
Tryon.
Also at 2-3/8 miles arc the
Doncaster, a conditioned
claimer with a purse of $7,500
and the Hunting Country Cup, a
maiden claimer for $5,000.
Sponsored by the ERA Walker
Agency and Ridgewood Farm,
the Hunting Country is a
memorial to Dr. Jack Bradshaw,
a long-time chairman of the
race meeting. The Doncaster,
named for its sponsor, the well
known apparel manufacturer, as
well as a famous race in
England, was once a race for
amateur riders. However, as
more and more of the top jock
eys have become professionals,
it has become necessary to open
