dents. It asks questions about
where you get your news, and if
you followed the Tucker mur
der case. It also asks if you are
following the Paul Acker mur
der case, and how you feel
about the death penally.
The survey was not sent out
by Tlie Tryon Daily Bulletin.
The State magazine April
edition carries a feature on
Tryon and the upcoming
Blockhouse Steeplechase. The
article describes Tryon, the
history of equestrian events in
the area and even lists places to
stay. Extra copies will be
available at The Bulletin next
week if you would like to pur
chase one.

N.C. State Senator Robert C.
Carpenter reports that some of
his constituents have had trou
ble with the phone numbers he
provided for Kuwait job infor
mation.
Mrs. Helen Carpenter, the
senator's secretary, said some
callers to the Army Corps of
Engineers have been given no
information, or even told
they've called the wrong num
ber.
"Not ail the people who
answer the phone there are
helpful," Sen. Carpenter said.
"We have been told that you
can leave your name and
address and they will send you
a list of people hiring."

Charlie Garrett
Wins District
Automotive Contest
Charlie Garrett, a senior at
Polk Central High School, won
the Region 8 Automotive Ser
vice Technology Competition at
Asheville-Biltmore Technical
College on Feb. 28.
Garrett will participate in the
State Automotive Contest to be
held April 11-12-13 in Ashe
ville.
In the Region 8 Competition,
contestants were required to
accomplish objectives which
included checking the compo
nents in an alternator, measur
ing a crankshaft, arranging
plug-in wires in correct order
on a live engine, and measuring
a disc brake rotor.

Sheriffs Drug
Fundraising Raises
Community Concerns
A Nashville, Tenn, firm's
telemarketing fundraising cam
paign underway in Polk County
has raised the concern of some
area residents.
On behalf of the Polk
County Sheriffs Department,
callers have been soliciting
.donations of up to $100 from
businesses and individuals to
help with the "Sheriffs annual
• drug education program."
Using a phone bank in the
Century 21 Alan Pructte &
Associates building in Tryon,
two or three callers have been
working for the last few days.
"The toll that drugs arc taking
from our children, the citizens
of tomorrow, is a severe loss
that we can no longer afford,"
the callers say. "In addition, 70
percent of all crimes are drug
related...
"We feel that this problem is a
war and we need as many sol
diers to help fight this war as
possible. Our goal is to educate
every man, woman and child in
the county on the seriousness of
drug abuse... Please open your
heart and help."

N.C. is the drug education pro
gram fundraising project man
ager. He said he has worked
for the last six months as an
independent contractor with
Benefit Shows of Nashville.
Watson said the money raised
here will be used to deliver an
