The Easier weekend weather:
Friday, high 64, low 53, hum.
50 percent and by 7 a.m. 1.35
inches of rain fell; Saturday,
high 54, low 40, hum. 52 per
cent and by 7 a.m. 3.55 inches
of rain fell; Sunday, high 61,
low 36, hum. 52 percent.
Without the deluge over the
weekend, Robert Dedmondt
reports that March would have
had less rain than average. As
it ended up, 9.02 inches of rain
fell in March, 1.88 inches more
than average. Nevertheless, the
precipitation to date in 1991 is
16.8 inches, 1.18 inches less
than the average. Last year by
this time, we had a surplus of
8.73 inches above the average.
The Polk County Historical
Association Inc. will meet today
at 2:30 p.m. at Stearns Educa
tional Center. Kathleen Card-
well Culbreth will give the his
tory of Bethlehem Methodist
Church in Mill Spring.
The Green Ruritans will hold

Elizabeth Whaley
Saluda Students Place
In Regional Rally
On March 14, three students
from Saluda School placed in
the District 8 Vocational Rally
at Western Carolina University.
In her first year of competition,
seventh grader Elizabeth
Whaley won the Creed category
against 15 competitors. She will
enter the State Vocational Club
Competition on May 11 in
Winston-Salem.
Josh Engel, an eighth grader,
came in third in Transportation
Careers. Kimberly Arms, a
ninth grader, came in third in
Consumer Homemaking
Careers. Some 300 vocational
club students took part in the

The Polk County Wolverine
women's track team will travel
to Hendersonville for meets-
today and Thursday at 4 p.m.
Three Make H-J
Basketball Teams
Benji Smith and Kevin Atkins
of Landrum were named to the
Spartanburg Herald-Journal
All-Academic basketball team
Sunday.
Smith, a 6-foot-2 senior
starter at forward, averaged 8
points per game and maintained
a 3.78 grade point average.
Atkins, a 5-foot-lO senior
starter at guard, averaged 6.3
5oints and led the Cardinals in
-point goals with 32. He has a
3.62 grade point average.
James Henderson of Landrum
was named to the Herald-
Journal All-Area boys bas
ketball team.
Henderson, at 6-foot, is the
smallest member of the all-area
team but he was also the area's
top scorer. He averaged 22.8
points and grabbed 7.9
rebounds a fame. He led the
Cardinals to a 17-10 record and
in the state Class 1A play-offs.
A 57 percent shooter from the
floor and a 65 percent free
throw shooter, Henderson
scored over 1,000 points during
his career.
Softball league
Meets Thursday
There will be an Open Soft-
ball League meeting Thursday,
April 4, at 7 p.m. at the Green
Creek Community Building
sponsored by the Green Creek
Ruritan Club.
