We heard recently from the
cool, breezy Fisher Island, Fla.,
where Mr. and Mrs. Richard
Bandler are languishing while
we swelter. There the newspa
per of record, The Miami
Herald, of course, is writing
about how nice it is to visit in
the Asheville area!
Richard Bandler sent along a
clipping in which the writer
traces the literary steps of Tho
mas Wolfe, Carl Sandburg and
the Flat Rock Playhouse.
It's true that we always think
the grass is greener. Keep the

Budget Process
Never Finalized
Until After
Public Hearing
Though the marathon budget
sessions of the Polk County
Board of Commissioners is
open to the public, no agree
ments made during any one
work session is final.
"Anything can happen and
probably will," said commis
sioner Tim McCormack of any
proposals included in the work
ing budget.
Legally the county commis
sioners cannot formally approve
anything decided on in the bud
get sessions, McCormack
explained. In addition, any
thing decided during the budget
session can change from day to
day and even minute to minute,
he said.
By law, any approval voiced
by the commissioners during
such a budget work session is
not official, he pointed out.
Official approval of the
1991-92 county budget will not
come until after the June 17 6
p.m. public hearing on the bud
get, McCormack said.
Depending on the length of
the public hearing, the commis
sioners will either give final
approval to the budget in open
session immediately following
the hearing or they will set a
special meeting prior to July 1,
McCormack said.
Any salary increases or addi
tional personnel discussed dur
ing these work sessions are not

Scale Models Put To The Test
For the past few weeks the students in Becky Schneider's draft
ing class at Polk Central High School have been designing their
own truss bridges. After coming up with a design they each built a
scale model of their designs. Once the bridges were completed the
students tested their bridges for efficiency by hanging weights
from them. They added weights until the bridge collapsed. First
place was awarded to Keith Nelon. Jesse Juenger won second
place. The tie for third place was between Chad Bailey and Chad
Edwards. Cash prizes were donated by Holland Brady, Anton
Cedervall and Ralph Sherer, who are all local architects.“Students
learned a great deal about designing processes and developing
efficient designs. Shown in the photo are, left to right, Edwards
Bailey, Juenger and Nelon. -Becky Schneider, Drafting Instructor

Dial-type pressure canners
are checked for conect pounds

be done every year as your can

free of charge. It is not neces

with a weighted gauge. Call
Home Economist, Eloise
Johnson, to make an appoint
ment. You will need to bring
the lid only and it only takes
