7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday
through Saturday, and Sundays
from 1 to 5 p.m. That schedule
is increasing his golf handicap,
however.
The latest correction in the
ongoing Bulletin saga of who's
paving what streets and where:
The cost to pave the half-mile
section of Braewick Road from
Dug Hill Road to the city limits
is being shared by the state and
adjacent property owners.
PLF Partners, which includes
Realtor Chris Langdon (a.k.a.
Herb Pufflewhite), is paying
$21,120, which represents 40
percent of the cost.

West Carteret High
Principal Hired By
Polk County Schools
The leader of the high school
with the best SAT scores in
southeastern North Carolina
was hired by Polk County
Tuesday evening.
Gerald Eubanks, 45, who for
the last two years has served as
principal of West Carteret High
School in Morehead City, was
hired during a special meeting
of the Polk County Board of
Education.
West Carteret High School's
1,400 students registered the
highest scores on the SAT test
of any high school in N.C.
Region 2, which includes
southeastern counties. Tlierc are
eiglit regions in the state.
The West Carteret students
also placed at the top in end-
of-course testing.
Eubanks will report to work in
Polk County soon after July 1st
and will take the helm at Polk
Central High School. While
there, he will also work to pre
pare for the opening of Polk
County High School, scheduled
for the fall of 1992.
"Assuming everything is fine
at Polk Central," Polk County
Schools Supt. James F. Causby
said Eubanks will take over the
helm at the new high school
when it opens.
Causby said Eubanks has
skills that may fit well with the
"objective based" curriculum
being designed for the new high
school.

Palmer Named
Rotarian Of The Year
H. Bruce Palmer was pre
sented the Joseph W. Wells
Memorial Trophy on June 17,
1991 by President Arthur Fisher
of the Tryon Rotary Club. This
award is given annually to the
Rotarian who best exemplifies
the Rotary motto "Service
Above Self."
Bruce, a Rotarian since 1981,
served on the club's Board of
Directors for three years. He
was elected President of Tryon
Rotary for the 1986-87 term,
and over the years he has served
as chairman of many of the
club's committees. He has taken
an active part in community
affairs since his arrival in Tryon
in 1981.
During the past several years,
and particularly during the past
year, he was responsible for
organizing and directing many
of the fund raising activities of
organizations serving the Polk

Brannon Wins
Landrum Seat
Doug Brannon took a 2-1
victory in the special election
held in Landrum Tuesday.
Brannon defeated Mitch
Stewart 295-149 for the Town
Council seat left vacant when
councilman James Helms
moved out of town.
"It's time to get busy now,"
Brannon said Wednesday. "And
thanks to Mitch for running a
clean campaign."

Coming In July
The Society for the Preservat
ion and Encouragement of Bar
bershop Quartet Singing in
America, represented by The
Palmetto Statesmen Barbershop
chorus, will return to Tryon on
Saturday evening, July 27. Tlie
all-male group will present
their 26th annual show at the
Tryon Fine Arts Center.
Featured in addition to the 35
voice of cappella chorus, will
be four quartets singing your
old favorites. The show, entitled
Riverboat Daze, looks at life
along the Mississippi prior to
the turn of the century. The
music will highlight the pad
dle-wheeler showboats along
with songs about the numerous
river towns.
Proceeds go to the Institute of
Logopedics serving handi
capped children with speech
and hearing impediments.
