Attention owners of power
skis: lake associations arc
beginning to enact restrictions
on the usage of Jet Skis.
Starting Aug. 1, the Lake
Wylie (S.C.) Marine Commis
sion will require any
13-15-year-olds operating a
power ski to have a photo ID
showing that they've completed
a three-hour boating safety
class. Preteens will be banned
altogether.
Lake Norman (N.C.) Marine
Commission is considering
similar measures.
Tickets will be issued to those
teenagers that haven't com
pleted the course, and to anyone
who is found skiing recklessly.
Jumping wakes within 50 feet
of boats will also net a skier a
ticket.
Power skis are fun, but can be
dangerous. Perhaps some sort of
safety measures might be con
sidered on Lake Lanier and
Lake Adger?
What's happening:
There will be a childbirth
preparation class at St. Luke's

No Athletics In
Academic Hours
Polk County students will no
longer be headed for the locker
room while classes arc still
going on, unless it's PE class
they're headed to.
The Polk County Board of
Education on Monday night
approved on first reading a
policy which would prohibit
regular season athletic events
from being scheduled "prior to
the end of the last scheduled
class of the day."
The Western North Carolina
Superintendents' Council
Athletic Committee proposed
the measure after studying the
amount of lost school time due
to athletic events.
"Students were missing more
time than we realized," Supt.
James F. Causby told the
board. He said he believes all
western regional school boards
will adopt the policy.
A main culprit in taking
students out of class has been
golf team participation,
Dr. Causby said.
As part of the new policy, the
board agreed to limit all regular
season golf matches to 9 holes.
"South Carolina has already
gone to 9-hole matches," he
said, and other Region 8
schools will likely do the same.
The new policy must be given
a second reading before
becoming part of Polk County
Schools' policy manual.

"Thursday's Partial
Solar Eclipse"
by Tim Linder
One of the most fascinating
and eagerly awaited spectacles
of the sky is a solar eclipse. A
solar eclipse occurs when the
moon passes between the sun
and the Earth, thus obscuring all
or part of the sun's light. This
Thursday, July 11th, a total
solar eclipse will occur, the
eclipse will be total along a
narrow path that crosses
Hawaii, the mid-Pacific and
parts of Mexico, Central and
South America, however all of
the continental United States
will experience the partial
phases of the eclipse.
In the two Carolina's the
eclipse will begin at approxi
mately 2:38 p.m. when the
moon will begin its trek across
the face of the sun. The moon
will be crossing the sun from
west to cast and will cover more
and more of the sun as time
passes. Mid-eclipse will occur
at 3:33 p.m. when one-third of
the sun’s disk will be covered
by the moon. After mid-eclipse
the moon will move slowly off
the face of the sun. IJie eclipse
will end at 4:26 p m. when no
part of the sun will any longer
be obscured by the moon.
WARNING: NEVER LOOK
DIRECTLY AT THE SUN, IT
CAN DAMAGE YOUR
EYESIGHT. Here are some
SAFE ways to watch the
eclipse:
