Parking is the problem with
shopping in Tryon, according to
Babs Cavendish. "There is
plenty of parking in Landrum
and Columbus," she said. And
the increase to a 6% sales tax in
North Carolina makes cros
sing the state line more attrac
tive, she said.
Cavendish was responding to
comments generated by recent
discussions at the Tryon
Thermal Belt Chamber of
Commerce. Tire chamber at this
very moment is formulating
plans to promote shopping in
the Thermal Belt area.
Bully good. Given an incen
tive, most shoppers don't mind
hunting a parking space now
and then.

One Killed In Accident
Charles Patrick McKee, 27, of Columbus, was killed when the
two-door, white Nissan automobile he was driving went over an
embankment off New Market Road just below Godshaw Hill and hit
a pine tree Thursday morning. A passenger, Tony Constance, was
taken to St Luke's Hospital and later transfered to Spartanburg
Regional Hospital by Polk County EMS. He was in between hospitals
at presstime and neither hospital had a condition report. The acci
dent was not discovered right away. When emergency personnel
arrived around 9:30 a.m., the car engine was cool and Constance was
pinned underneath the wreckage. Tryon Police Chief Nathan Shields
said he believes the accident occured sometime after 5 a.m. A
wrecker was hauling the car out of the woods and back onto the
road when this photograph was taken.
