We have just received the
news that Betty Vosburgh, a
former Tryon resident, set two
American records in the
women's 55 and older at the
Birmingham Track Classic,
May 25 at Samford University.
She scored with a 57.16 in the
300, and a leap of 13-3 1/2 in
the long jump.
More records are sure to fall
when Vosburgh enters a new
age group this month.
What's happening:
The Tryon-Thermal Belt
Chamber of Commerce will
hold a special membership
meeting at The Vineyard
tomorrow at 8 a.m., for the pur
pose of electing new directors.
Hundreds of hardback books
will be offered for 25 cents
each, and paperbacks for 10
cents at the Isothermal Com
munity College book and music
sale Thursday and Friday on the
Polk campus lawn.

Orientation
Thursday, August 1
The orientation for new sub
stitute teachers in Polk County
will be Thursday, August 1
from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Board
Room at Stearns Education
Center, 202 E. Mills Street in
Columbus.
Correction
Last week it was reported in
error that the Polk County
Democratic Men's Club was to
have met last Saturday, July 20.
The meeting, in fact, is sche
duled for this coming Saturday,
July 27, 8:30 a.m., at the Dem
ocratic Headquarters in Colum
bus.
This reporting was the fault of
the Men's Club secretary. He
apologizes for this error, espe
cially to those who came to the
headquarters Saturday morning
expecting a meeting to be held.
Meetings are normally sche
duled for the fourth Saturday in
every month. All Democratic
men are invited to the meeting
on Saturday. Biscuits and coffee
will be served.

Baby 'Miss
South Carolina'
Elizabeth Grace Fagan of
Irmo, S.C. participated in the
Baby Miss South Carolina
Pageant on June 30. The current
Baby Miss Irmo was one of 31
contestants from across the state
in the pageant which was held
at Embassy Suites in Columbia.
She was chosen 1st Runner-Up
for which she won a savings
bond, trophy and ride-on toy.
Elizabeth is the daughter of
Gregg and Karen Fagan, for
merly of Tryon. She has an
older brother, Alex.
Out of town relatives attend
ing the pageant were: Mrs. and
Mrs. Allen Pruette of Tryon;
Cappy Pruette of Spartanburg;
Pat Pruette of Greenville and
Janice Fagan of Green Creek.

Leave For
Junior Olympics
Qualifiers from the Polk
County Blue Streaks and their
coaches leave this week for the
University of N.C. at Chapel
Hill to participate in the
National Junior Olympics.
Karen Godlock and Seth
Peoples finished as one of the
top three in their events in
regional competition to qualify
to run in the national finals.
They have spent the month of
July in training with their
coaches, Alan Peoples and
Steve Aldred. Godlock will
compete in the 3000M and the
1500M runs, and Peoples will
run in the 3000M.
Godlock and Peoples are
members of the Polk County
Blue Streaks, a TAC-affiliated
youth group. It is a non-profit
organization and depends solely
on contributions from the com
munity for its expenses. If any
one would like to help with the
cost of this week's trip, please
send the contribution to Tryon
Federal Savings and Loan.

Five women from Red Fox
Country Club participated in the
Western Carolina Women's
Golf Association Tournament
on Tuesday, July 16, at Hen
dersonville Country Club.
Elsa Butler won second low
gross in her flight.
