The Hickory Nut/Oak Tree Is
Dead! Long live the ?
The Hickory Nut/Oak Tree?
Yeah, you remember that
funny tree which used to stand
between the post office and
NCNB in Tryon. Been there
some number of decades. It was
covered with vines. The Hick
ory Nut/Oak tree!
Anyway, we at The Bulletin
now hear that there is an infor
mal poll being taken as to what
kind of tree should be planted
as a replacement.
One outstanding lady has
suggested a Hardy Mongolian
Elm. These grow well in New
York City, withstanding all the
pollution there, she says.
What do you suggest?
It should be a tree of great

Commissioners Ask
Bridge Be Named
For Trooper Perry
If the N.C. Department of
Transportation listens, the
Fox Mountain Road bridge
of N.C. 74 will be named
after a N.C. Highway
Patrolman.
The Polk County Board of
Commissioners on Monday
passed a resolution asking that
the bridge be named the "Clyde
Perry Bridge."
Clyde Perry was a N.C.
Highway Patrolman killed in
the line of duty on Fox Moun
tain Road July 2,1972.
Polk County Emergency
Management officer Jim
Cochran said other law enfor
cement officers had asked him
to take up the matter with the
board.
Cochran said he also was a
personal friend of Perry's before
he died.
Perry died when he lost con
trol of his automobile on a Fox
Mountain Road curve during a
chase, Cochran said. The
trooper was chasing a car first
spotted in Mill Spring spinning
circles in the road.
Perry, an Air Force veteran
who had six years with the state
highway patrol, was 28 when he
died. He left behind a wife and
11-month-old daughter.
Cochran said the department
of transportation is likely to
approve the county's request.

If you're sewing for a pre-
schooler, you've probably
noticed that children's patterns
have the same breast and waist
measurements as toddlers' but
children's patterns arc meant for
a taller child. Shoulder, arm and
dress lengths are longer.
