The Polk County Sheriffs
Department found and pulled
about 100 marijuana plants
found growing in the Grassy
Knob, Rock Springs area
Tuesday.
Sheriff Boyce Carswell said
the plants, about 4-6 foot tall,
would have a value of about
$1,600 each when mature.
Carswell, who was flying in
the Blue Ridge Narcotics Task
Force helicopter Tuesday when
the plants were spotted, said his
department has uprooted about
3,000 plants this growing sea

If all 3,000 plants had reached
maturity, they would have had a
street value of $4.8 million.
Carswell said the helicopter

"Fiddler" Everywhere
Proof that a stage play has
become a great triumph - a part
of the history of its time - is the
use of its title in slogans,
essays, and expressions com
pletely unrelated to the show.
"Fiddler on the Roof is a good
example. In 1965 when "Fid
dler" opened in New York, the
city had a prominent roofing
contractor named Fiedler who
used to have his trucks painted
with the slogan "We Cover
New York." Soon after the
show scored its huge success,
he changed the slogan to "See
Fiedler on the Roof."
Also, the May 27, 1991 issue
of The New Republic magazine
has on its cover a caricature, in
color, of Gorbachev trying to
balance himself while standing
on a hovel and sawing away on
a fiddle. The cover carries the
caption in bold lettering - "Fid
dler on the Roof." The two
main articles in the issue are
concerned with Gorbachev's
perilous balancing act: between
communism and democracy,
and between the status quo and
change.
Furthermore, the August 4,
1991 issue of The New York
Times Book Review includes a
lengthy review of a book writ
ten by a well known professor
of English and literary critic.
Although he is the author of
numerous works, this is his first
book in nine years. His name -
Leslie Fiedler. The name of the
book? You guessed it! "Fiedler
on the Roof." The book has as
its subtitle, "Essays on Litera
ture and Jewish Identity."
