The weather Wednesday: high
92, low 68, hum. 69 percent,
and by Thursday at 7 a.m. .05
inches of rain had fallen.
A conservation tip was passed
along to us recently from Bill
Hague. He read the following
clip in Car & Driver:
"Americans are throwing gas
money down the drain - per
haps as much as $4 billion a
year. That's the finding of a
recent report from the General
Accounting Office. Pointing to
an Energy Department study,
the GAO says that sales of
premium-grade gasoline
increased from 14 percent of
total gas sales in 1984 to 23
percent in 1989. Yet the per
centage of new autos that
require premium dropped from
27 percent in 1971 to just 6

Man Who Dropped
Dumbbell Gets Life
Timothy Lee Waldrop, 22, of
• Gramling, was found guilty of
murder Wednesday and given a
• mandatory life sentence.
He will be eligible for parole
.in 20 years.
The Spartanburg jury refused
to dismiss the act of dropping a
dumbbell from an overpass as
an unintentional accident, as the
• defense had argued.
Defense attorneys said their
client was guilty of manslaugh
ter, not murder, in the death of
Indiana trucker Philip Earl
Reed.
One juror said the jury felt
Waldrop probably did not want
to kill anyone, but was old
enough to know the danger and
.dropped the deadly weights into
the path of the oncoming truck
anyway.
• No trial dates have been set
for the three other young men
who were on the Landrum
Mill Road bridge the night of
March 21,1990.
Arlo Schuler, 18, David Lee
Alverson, 18, and William Roy
Camp III, 17, all of Inman, are
also charged with murder, but
may receive reduced sentences
for agreeing to testify against
Waldrop.
