The ongoing debate over the
Tryon Youth Center production
of Grease has been interesting.
It certainly minors in a small
way the national debate
between Jesse Helms and the
National Endowment for the
Arts.
People have been stopping us
recently to say they arc weary
of reading so many expressions
of opinion on the same subject.
Invariably, with the next
breath they begin presenting
their own opinion.
We have enjoyed the debate,
and respect everyone who is
willing to talk about issues, and
la listen to others talk about
issues.
All these writers deserve
applause for having the courage
to speak out. That is an out
standing quality in a person, not
something to be ridiculed.
The only unfortunate thing is
that some letters seemed to be
directed more at individuals
than at the ideas being dis
cussed.
How about us? Well, I believe
it is best to focus on the best

Dear Jeff:
Marge Wheaton has written
you an interesting commentary
on my letter to Charles Taylor
supporting an English language
amendment to the constitution.
However, it indicates a lack of
awareness of the aggressive
attacks against English as our
national language which have
persisted for several years. The
principal proponents of this
attempt to make the United
States a multi-lingual society
are the National Education
Association, the Mexican-
American Legal and Education
Defense Fund and the ACLU
Their efforts have been suc
cessful in some states which are
now legally multi-lingual and
where teachers must be hired to
teach in the native language of
each student. The NEA, of
course, applauds!
I don't fear for the English
language. Il is the language of
international aviation, com
merce and diplomacy. It will
survive all attacks. I do fear for
the unity of the United States if
it becomes officially a multi
lingual society We don't need
the problems of Yugoslavia or
Canada. The United States is a
multi-cultural nation unique in
the world in having blended its
varied ethnic groups into a
common society unified by lan
guage as "Americans". Let's
keep it that way 1
