oh-so-gooey travel articles
Sunday - this one about
FENCE. What bittersweet tim
ing.
David Riddle, known to some
school children as Mr. Nature,
announced today that he is
leaving FENCE after five years
as its nature director.
Riddle told The Bulletin he
decided two months ago, and
that now is just the right time to
make the decision public. He
was headed into a meeting of
the FENCE board of directors
Monday morning to make the
announcement.
Riddle said he will be looking
for work within an hour or so's
drive from Spartanburg, where
his father is recovering from
surgery. That could mean the
Riddle family will stay close
by.
That would be doubly good
for the Thermal Belt. In

Columbus To Hire Two
Policemen This Week
In a special meeting Monday,
the Columbus Town Council
voted two to one to hire two
policemen by the end of this
week.
Dr. Tom Bolling voted
against the motion to hire a
second additional policeman,
stating that the board never
acted on a motion made four
months ago to hire a first addi

Dr. Bolling questioned the
legality of hiring a second addi
tional policeman without acting
on the first motion and without

Polk County exhibitors Mitch Davis and Randy Smith are shown
prior to their competition at the WNC Junior Dairy Show
The Dairy Show Experience
The UNC Junior Dairy Show
is an annual event that is held
each year in Fletcher, N.C. This
summer the show involved 37
exhibitors showing 56 animals
in 35 different events. The
events are generally determined
by animal breed and age,
though some special events are
based on the age of the exhibi
tor rather than characteristics of
the animal. Exhibitors ranged in
age from about 5 to 19 and it is
most impressive to see how
well the younger boys and girls
demonstrated the patience and
discipline needed to show these
beautiful animals.
Polk County was represented
at this show by five young men
who were all of high school

age, and their entries were 12
cows and calves of various
ages. Each animal in each event
is judged on type, that is, how
well the animal represents the
best conformation for that
breed, and on Fitting and
Showing, which is how well the
anima] is groomed and handled.
All 12 Polk County animals
received blue ribbons for type
and excellent ratings on fitting
and showing. Five animals were
class champions and three of
those were Grand Champions
for their breed covering all
classes or age groups.
This is an outstanding record
and our hats are off to Matthew
