Did you know that if Judge
Clarence Thomas is confirmed
at the age of 43, and serves the
length of time served by retiring
83-year-oId Judge Thurgood
Marshall, he will serve on the
Supreme Court for 40 years?
That's the equivalent of 10
presidential terms, and makes
Thomas potentially much more
important to United States his
tory than any one president. The
Senate Judiciary Committee
members made a number of
interesting observations Tues
day in their opening statements
at the Thomas confirmation
hearings.

Landrum Voters
May Choose Council/
Manager Structure
Landrum voters will have a
chance to change the form of
Landrum Town Government in
November, but they won't have
the choice to expand the num
ber of councilmen.
The Landrum Town Council
Tuesday gave unanimous
approval to the second and final
reading of an ordinance calling
for a referendum on the
November ballot to change
from the Council Form of gov
ernment to the Coun-
cil/Manager form.
However, the council voted
down 3-2 a second reading of
an ordinance to present a refer
endum expanding the council
members from four to six.
"Frankly I see no benefit of a
six-member council," said
Mayor Robert H. Cogdell.
Cogdell also said that there is
no room in city hall for more
council members, the expansion
would cause another election,
and this would be a cosily pro
ject with no apparent benefits.
"Like you said at the last
meeting, let the people decide,"
said councilman Fred Williams
There arc advantages to a
six-member council, said
councilman Doug Brannon,
there will be more than one
person over a department and
councilmen will have to work
together more, he pointed out.
