C. 28782 FRIDAY, SEPT. 20.1991 Arthur Farwell Day Saturday Is Arthur Farwell Day in Polk County, a day for the everyone to take note of one man's many contributions to community life. Mary Ann Claud recently interviewed Farwell and the interest ing conversation is featured inside today's Bulletin. Hall Of Fame Dina Smith McClure has been named to the Gardner-Webb College Athletics Hall of Fame. She was inducted as the first representative of the women's basketball program during a ceremony Sept. 14. McClure, the daughter of Judy Smith of Stotts Corner, is the all-time leading scorer with 2,031 points and ranks as the second all-time leading rebounder with 874. She holds single game records for points scored (46), field goals attempted (39), free throws attempted (19) and free throw percentage (100). She holds single season records for free throws made (146) and free throws attempted (183). She played in the most games (94), and holds career records for field goals attempted (1,742), free throws attempted (594) and free throw percentage (76.9). Since leaving Gardner- Webb, McClure has been coaching high school basket- ball. She began her career at Polk Central High School and is presently thae Head Women's basketball coach at East Ruth erford High School. 20C Per t ops A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE Large Medicare Population Clouds Doctors' Finances Today we present the first in a four-part series by Claire Wharton exploring the chal lenges facing the medical com munity in the Thermal Belt. Since spring, two doctors have left the St. Luke's Hospi tal's medical staff. For financial reasons, both moved to areas with fewer over-65. Medicare patients. More area doctors are expected to retire soon, which will further thin the ranks. The Polk County Commission on Aging recently sounded a warning call, and urged people to protest "unfair" Medicare payments which doctors in this area must accept. A key factor for retirees choosing this area in the first place is the 74-bed St. Luke's Hospital and its 21-doctor resi dent medical staff. Like the commission, many area residents are worried that areas like Polk could face a medical crisis in the future. The question is, given the finances of a heavily Medicare dependent practice, can the Thermal Belt continue to retain and recruit doctors? (Continued on Page 2)
