gathered in the cafeteria of Mill
Spring Elementary School
Thursday night.

Mill Spring Accelerated
School is running a program,
with the help of volunteer
teachers, in which parents bring
their children to the school at
night and learn ways to teach
math skills at home.
Teachers Gwen Sain, Char
lene Key and Carol Wilson led
the Family Math activities
last Thursday. Youngsters cut
out a group of geometric shapes
- everything from a simple
square to a rhombus and a par
allelogram - and then solved a
puzzle in which the shapes are
assembled to look like a bird.
Even the adults struggled with
that one.
On the previous Tuesday
night, the activities involved
counting beans, including one
exercise in which you counted
beans inside your closed fist
without opening it up to look.

East Henderson
The Lady Wolverine Cross
Country team traveled to East
Henderson High School on
Wed., Oct. 2. Polk County fin
ished in 2nd place out of a field
of 9 schools, on a 3 mile course.
Karen Godlock finished first
with a time of 17:21; Jenny
McGranc, 2nd, 19:40; Pat
McEntyrc, 6th, 20:42; Sara
Fitzsimmons, 26th, 21:46;
Natalie Jackson, 35th, 22:55.
Also participating were
Rhonda Burnett, 25:33; Jennifer

27:29 and Marta Burnett 27:52.

'Outstanding' Member
Delia Ann Byrd, Activity
Director of Autumn Care of
Saluda, attended the North
Carolina Activity Professionals
Convention at Nags Head on
Sept. 11-13. She was awarded a
plaque for "Outstanding Mem
ber of the Year" for her 7 years
of service as treasurer of the
organization. Ms. Byrd is a
charter member of the organi
zation and was instrumental in
helping to organize it in 1982.
She served as treasurer from
1983-88 and continues to assist
in this office as consultant.
She is also active in the
Western North Carolina District
of the N. C. Activity Profes
sionals holding various offices
in the 16 years in which she has
been a member. Recently she
was elected to serve as treasurer
of this organization.

Dr. Edgerton Speaks
To Tryon Lions
The Tryon Lions Club will
meet Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the
Western Steer Family Steak
House in Columbus.
Dr. D. Ezra Edgerton will
address the state of health in our
society and the value of pre
vention in cardiovascular, ele
vated cholesterol and degenera
tive situations. He will briefly
touch on the education and
scope of practice of North Car
olina chiropractors, but his main
aim will be to inform the mem
bers of things they can do for
themselves and their families to
stay healthy versus getting well
after the fact.
Dr. Edgerton was born and
raised in Eastern North Caro
lina, graduated from the Uni
versity of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill and later from
Logan College of Chiropractic
in St. Louis. He has a family
practice in Columbus, utilizing
manual medicine, nutrition and
meridian therapy. He is a
horseman and musician and
lives in Columbus.
Marion Brock is in charge of
the program.
