Fifty six people hiked up
Mount LeConte with Margaret
Stevenson last Saturday. It was
the 79-ycar-old former Tryon
resident's 500th time up the
mountain.
Her hiking buddy, Nancy
Cain, said it takes longer to hike
with Stevenson. Not because
she's slowed down, but because
so many people stop to talk to
her and have their picture taken
with her.
"She's become quite a legend
on the mountain," Cain said.
Stevenson's legend was fur
thered by the "500th hike"
story. The Knoxville (Tenn.)
News-Sentinel placed the story
on the front page, as did Ste
venson's hometown paper in
•Maryville, Tenn. The Associ
ated Press picked up the tale, as
did area radio stations.
Five hundred felicitations
Margaret!
