The Braves, he pointed out, had only 800 people attending some games during previous losing seasons. Those filling the stands during the series, he said, were "upstart yuppie trash." "And the Tomahawk Chop," he said. "It's unseemly. And Jane Fonda. Jane Fonda doing the Tomahawk Chop right there on television. Oh, go back to Hanoi Jane." Well, Garrison's wish came true. Now we are going to have the opportunity to hear other interesting stories of the famous frigate's 194 year career - including the fact that a well known Polk County family has had three relatives who served on "Old Ironsides." Our speaker for the Nov. Sth, 2:30 p.m. meeting of the Polk County Historical Assn, will be Commander Tyrone Martin, U.S. Navy Ret., a career naval officer with service in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. His final command was the USS Constitution during the period of the nation's Bicentennial. Since his retirement, he has actively pursued a career of researching and writing naval history, especially the period of the early U.S. sailing navy. His efforts has been recognized by a George Washington Honor Medal from the Freedom Foun dation of Valley Forge, by being designated a Samuel Eliot Morison Distinguished Scholar, and, most recently, by his elec tion as Overseer of the USS Constitution Museum. Cmdr. Martin and his wife Mary, have been Tryon resi dents since June, 1989. Community Reporter Read The Bulletin For Local News
