Public radio talk show host
Garrison Keillor was on the air
Saturday night talking about
the Minnesota Twins.
Keillor is from Minnesota,
as is his mythical Lake Wobe
gon. It's no wonder he is parti
san.
Minnesota must win, he said,
because they represent "all
that's right with America". The
Braves, he pointed out, had only
800 people attending some
games during previous losing
seasons. Those filling the stands
during the series, he said, were
"upstart yuppie trash."
"And the Tomahawk Chop,"
he said. "It's unseemly. And
Jane Fonda. Jane Fonda doing
the Tomahawk Chop right there
on television. Oh, go back to
Hanoi Jane."
Well, Garrison's wish came
true. The Twins eked out a win
at the last moment Sunday
night. It was sad to see such a
great series end with anyone
going home a loser.
In fact it's downright hard to

Students To Preach
In Area Churches
Gardner-Webb College will
hold Ministerial Education Day
in the Polk Baptist Association
Nov. 3.
The Association encompasses
the 21 Southern Baptist
churches in Polk County,
including Columbus, Green
Creek, Mill Spring and Tryon.
The Rev. Lee Gregory is the
Director of Missions.
Ministerial Education Day is a
partnership program between
associations in the Piedmont
and western sections of North
Carolina and Gardner-Webb
College. Churches who commit
to participate allow a Gardner-
Webb ministerial student to
preach in the Sunday morning
worship service.
Students are then evaluated by
the minister of the church as
well as the College's campus
minister. This input helps stu
dents preparing for the ministry
increase their preaching skill
and competence.
Last year, Gardner-Webb
students had 136 opportunities

Former Captain Of
'Old Ironsides' Speaks
Most of us know something
about the USS Constitution or
"Old Ironsides" but we know
only a few of the historical
highlights. Now we are going to
have the opportunity to hear
other interesting stories of the
famous frigate's 194 year career
- including the fact that a well
known Polk County family has
had three relatives who served
on "Old Ironsides."
Our speaker for the Nov. Sth,
2:30 p.m. meeting of the Polk
County Historical Assn, will be
Commander Tyrone Martin,
U.S. Navy Ret., a career naval
officer with service in both the
Korean and Vietnam wars. His
final command was the USS
Constitution during the period
of the nation's Bicentennial.
Since his retirement, he has
actively pursued a career of
researching and writing naval
history, especially the period of
the early U.S. sailing navy. His
efforts has been recognized by a
George Washington Honor
Medal from the Freedom Foun
dation of Valley Forge, by
being designated a Samuel Eliot
Morison Distinguished Scholar,
and, most recently, by his elec
tion as Overseer of the USS
Constitution Museum.
Cmdr. Martin and his wife
Mary, have been Tryon resi
dents since June, 1989.
