The weather Thursday, high

Only 1.16 inches of rain fell
during the month of October,
erasing the year's surplus of
rain over the average to date.
With 54.55 inches of rain to
date, we now have .97 inches
below average. An average of
4.77 inches of rain falls here in
October. Last year, 10.76
biches fell. Go figure.

just what you're looking at.
There is an exhilarating golden
hue across the top of the picture
which breaks off into streaks of
white like a fine old beard.
Blink and look again, and you
see its a river. It's Tad Stamm's
photograph of the Little Ten
nessee River in the Great
Smoky Mountains.
Stamm's photography is on
display at Photo Graphia in
Tryon through the end of
November. His photographs of
natural scenes have been pub
lished in Popular Photography
and have been displayed at the
Metropolitan Museum of Art.
There's one shot of a wall of
Boston Ivy. It's amazing that the
eaves, their shapes, and all
their varied colors, could hold

Polk Retail Sales
Decrease Sharply
Retail sales, which have been
climbing steadily in Polk
County since February, dropped
dramatically in September
according to figures released by
the N.C. Department of Reve
nue.
Sales and Use Tax collections
for September totalled $75,529,
representing sales of $3.7 mil
lion. That's a decrease of $1.2
million from August sales.
Rutherford County sales
dropped for the second month
in a row, going from $25.8 mil
lion in August to $22.7 million
in September.
Henderson County sales,
which dipped in August,
grew in $3.3 million in Sep
tember to $43.5.
