Dixie Yarns announced on Tuesday that it will be cutting 700 jobs, about 10 percent of the Chattanooga-based com pany's workforce. The company has plants in the North Carolina towns of Gastonia, Ranlo, Belmont, Mount Holly, Mebane, Tarboro, Newton, Saxapahaw, Hope Mills, Cumberland and Tryon. Bob Neely, general manager of Dixie Yams' Southern Mer cerizing plant in Tryon, said his workforce will be largely unaf fected. Two jobs were cut through attrition, Neely said, and one job was eliminated. But no other job cuts are planned. Neely said he met with the company employees last Friday to announce the overall com pany plans and to assure them their jobs were safe. Southern Mercerizing was given an award in 1990 as one of the Dixie Yams' best finish ing plants, measured by return on capital employed. "The last ten years here have been extremely productive," (Continued On Back Page) Last Game At Harmon Field An era which began many years ago when Mr. Curt Eargle spearheaded an effort to con struct a football stadium at Harmon Field will come to an end on Friday, Nov. 22. On that night the Polk County High School Wolverine football team will host the Black Knights of Robbinsville High School in a second round play-off game. The Wolverines advanced to the second round by virtue of their exceptional effort last Friday against the highly regarded Elkin High School Buckin' Elks. Because this will be the final high school football game to be conducted at Eargle Stadium, the Polk County schools plan some special events to mark the end of this era. At 5:30 p.m. on Friday a group of parents and supporters of the Wolverine football team will meet at the stadium to decorate the stands with signs, placards, and bal loons. Just prior to the kick-off, the Polk County Wolverine cheerleaders will form a spirit line which will usher the Wolverine team onto the field. A special invitation is extended to everyone who played for either Tryon High School or Polk Central High School as well as the Wolverines from the past two years to be a part of the spirit line. The invitation is also open to those who were cheerleaders at either Tryon and Polk Central and the cheerlead- (Continiied On Back Page) Walk-A-Thon Report Tula Hartmut, coordinator of this years Saluda Walk-A-Thon for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, reported that $225 had been collected. The walk about included 3 routes of varying dis tances with refreshment stops entoute. Refreshments hostesses were Martha Ashley, Sigi Henderickson, Nancy Johnson and DeAnn Bird. Starters at the table on Main St. included Sarah Ward, Mercy Weitzen and Tula.Hartmut. The picture offered in the raffle was won by Peggy Dando.
