Dixie Yarns announced on
Tuesday that it will be cutting
700 jobs, about 10 percent of
the Chattanooga-based com
pany's workforce.
The company has plants in
the North Carolina towns
of Gastonia, Ranlo, Belmont,
Mount Holly, Mebane, Tarboro,
Newton, Saxapahaw, Hope
Mills, Cumberland and Tryon.
Bob Neely, general manager
of Dixie Yams' Southern Mer
cerizing plant in Tryon, said his
workforce will be largely unaf
fected.
Two jobs were cut through
attrition, Neely said, and one
job was eliminated. But no
other job cuts are planned.
Neely said he met with the
company employees last Friday
to announce the overall com
pany plans and to assure them
their jobs were safe.
Southern Mercerizing was
given an award in 1990 as one
of the Dixie Yams' best finish
ing plants, measured by return
on capital employed.

Last Game
At Harmon Field
An era which began many
years ago when Mr. Curt Eargle
spearheaded an effort to con
struct a football stadium at
Harmon Field will come to an
end on Friday, Nov. 22. On that
night the Polk County High
School Wolverine football team
will host the Black Knights of
Robbinsville High School in a
second round play-off game.
The Wolverines advanced to the
second round by virtue of their
exceptional effort last Friday
against the highly regarded
Elkin High School Buckin'
Elks.
Because this will be the final
high school football game to be
conducted at Eargle Stadium,
the Polk County schools plan
some special events to mark the
end of this era. At 5:30 p.m. on
Friday a group of parents and
supporters of the Wolverine
football team will meet at the
stadium to decorate the stands
with signs, placards, and bal
loons. Just prior to the kick-off,
the Polk County Wolverine
cheerleaders will form a spirit
line which will usher the
Wolverine team onto the field.
A special invitation is extended
to everyone who played for
either Tryon High School or
Polk Central High School as
well as the Wolverines from the
past two years to be a part of
the spirit line. The invitation is
also open to those who were
cheerleaders at either Tryon and
Polk Central and the cheerlead-
