Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving. Now, back to business. Did you notice something about Robert Bates' comments at the public hearing on the sign ordinance Monday night. He said he opposed any ordinance, and urged people to "stand for what's right." But did he really oppose any rules? What's right, he said, is that he should be able to put a sign on his property. It's his business alone, he said, "as long as it doesn't stand in front of a neighbor's business." Well, Robert just proposed the first item in a good sign ordi nance. County Attorney R. Jay Foster would put it in legalese, but it would say, in Robert's words: "You shall not post your sign in front of your neighbor's business." Think about it. If you think long enough, and are honest with yourself, you'll come up with other simple rules of com mon decency and neighborli ness which protect everyone's rights. C 28782 Runners Enter Kinney Regional Five Polk County runners have entered the Kinney Cross Country Championships to be held in Charlotte Saturday. They are Karen Godlock, Jason Denton, Natalie Jackson, Chad Lanford and Seth Peoples. The Kinney Championships, the first national championship meet in all of sports for high school athletes, are sponsored by Kinney Shoes. The races constitute the yardstick against which the nation's top high school runners measure them selves against their peers. St. Lukes Foundation Director To Speak Charles E. Dunn, executive director of St. Luke's Hospital Foundation, will speak at the Tryon Kiwanis Club meeting Tuesday Dec. 3 at Western Steer. He will explain why the foun dation has been formed and why a paid professional staff is needed. Dunn is former vice chancel lor of the N.C. School of the Arts in Winston-Salem. The program will include crafts, Christmas carols, and a claymation film about the meaning of the season. The theme of the celebration will be "Christmas as a Time to Give." Sign Ordinance Vote On Monday Agenda The sign ordinance proposal is on Monday's agenda for the Polk County Board of Com missioners. The board meets at 7:30 p.m. Monday night in the courthouse annex. Commissioner Tim McCor mack said it is likely that the issue will be put to a vote. Tickets are on sale for FENCE'S "Home for the Holi days" concerts to be held Dec 21 and 22.
