was from the play Porgy and
Bess.
What ever it is from, it is
beautiful and you don't often
get to hear it anymore. That is,
unless you hear Emmy Fran-
kenfield's tape of 24 Golden
Oldies on piano accompanied
by organ. She claims her third
tape, on sale at The Book Shelf,
is "especially for youngsters
over 50." And I say, youngsters
under 50 as well.
What's happening:
Today's meeting of the
AAUW group "Exploring
Ideas" will be at Eileen White's
home, 3 Hunting Country
Trails. This is a change of loca
tion.
The Polk County Board of
Commissioners will meet
tonight at 7:30 in the cour
thouse annex. A vote on the
sign ordinance is expected to
be taken.
The Polk County Historical
Association will hear Anne

Mary M. Strange
Mary Maliaffey Strange, 98,
of 1475 Landrum Mill Road,
Landrum, died Nov. 27, 1991
in St. Luke's Hospital.
A native of Spartanburg
County, she was the widow of
Charlie F. Strange Sr. and
daughter of the late Wesley W.
and Rebecca Mullens Mahaffey.
She was the oldest member of
Ingleside Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons,
Glenn W. Strange of Laurens,
S.C. and Charlie F. Strange Jr.
of Campobello; five daughters,
Emily Fowler of Gaffney, S.C.,
Ruth Sprouse of Greer, S.C.,
Mary Ethel Lamb of Ruther
fordton, Martha Rogers of
Sumter, S.C. and Janie Willard
of Campobello, S.C.; 23 grand
children; 42 great-
grandchildren; 13 great-great
grandchildren; and one great-
great-great-grandchild.
Services were held at 2 p.m.
Saturday at Ingleside Baptist
Church by the Revs. Everette
Wallace and Joe Holbert. Burial
was in Gramling United Meth
odist Church Cemetery.
AL-ANON Group
The AL-ANON Group for
the Tryon-Columbus area
meets every Monday at 8 p.m.
at the Columbus Presbyterian
Church in the upstairs room of
the educational building. If
alcohol is a problem in your

Al-Anon.

Bill Edens
William M. Edens
William McKinley Edens, 88,
of 1521 Carolina Dr., Tryon,
died Thurs., Nov. 289, 1991 at
his home.
He was born in Chicago, Ill.
and he was the son of the late
William Grant and Maude
Bruner Edens. He was a former
resident of Winnetka, Ill, and a
Tryon residence since 1971. He
was the husband of the late Ina
Rew Edens who died in 1982.
Mr. Edens, a retired officer of
a major Chicago bank, was a
former member and director of
Tryon Rotary Club; past presi
dent and director of Lanier
Library Association; past direc
tor of Polk County Heart
Association, Tryon Photo
graphic Society, Hospice of
Polk County, Inc.; and an hon
orary member of Tryon Garden
Club.
Surviving are two daughters,
Charlotte Hanson of New York,

Gowensville Club
Meets Thurs., Dec. 5
Gowensville Community
Club has scheduled its quarterly
meeting on Thurs., Dec. 5, due
to conflicting schedules later in
the month. Officer elections,
postponed from the last meeting
will be held, along with a Meet
and Greet Your Neighbor social
hour. All local residents are
invited to come and bring
neighbors who have recently
moved to the area. The meeting
begins at 7:30 p.m.

Receives Degree
Mrs. Doris Durham Cham
pion, of Peniel Road, Columbus
recently received degrees from
Isothermal Community College,
Spindale. They were an associ
ate of applied science, teacher
associate and child care worker.
While at Isothermal she was
inducted into the Sigma Chi
chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa
Society, received the 1991
Teacher Associate Award, for
outstanding student and was
active in the Child Care Club.
She also maintained the Dean's
list with a 3.90 GPA while at
ICC.
