N.C 28782 Commissioners Want Changes In Sign Law The haggling over a sign ordinance for Polk County reached down to the details Monday night. No agreement as to any final law was reached by the Polk County Board of Commission ers. In fact, by a vote of three- to-two, the board decided not to pass the sign ordinance on first reading, even with several amendments. Commissioners Sue Cochran, Carson Deck and John Edwards voted against passage, saying they wanted to see a revised draft of the ordinance before accepting it. The vote, however, was virtu ally meaningless. County Atlorney R. Jay Foster said. Since the board could only hold a "first reading" of the ordi nance Monday, it didn't matter how the vote went or even if a vote was taken. It would have taken a unanimous vote to approve the ordinance on first reading, Fos ter said. On second reading, however, a simple majority vote can pass the ordinance. Board chairman Jeannie Mar tin said Tuesday that all the board members had agreed after the meeting that they would be ready to take a vote at the board's next meeting, Dec. 16 at 3 p.m. "I am pretty sure the sign ordinance will be passed," commissioner Sue Cochran said Tuesday. (Photo by Ceri Dando) —Community Reporter Godlock To Participate In National Championship Polk County's Karen Godlock finished fourth in the Kinney Cross Country South Regional meet held Sat., Nov. 30 at Charlotte's McAlpine Park. By being among the top eight fin ishes at this meet Karen has earned the right to participate in the national finals in San Diego on Dec. 14. This is the 13th year that Kinney Shoes has sponsored a national championship in cross country, the United States is divided into four regions and the top eight form each region participate in the national championships in San Diego. In the south regional Megan Flowers of Texas was 1st with a time of 17:46; 2nd Kathi Ward of Florida 18:02; 3rd. Meghan McCarthy of Virginia 18:10 and 4th.
