Landrum Residents
Can Dial 911 Now
The Landrum Town Council
voted to change the Landrum
Police dispatching system to the
emergency 911 dispatching
system of Spartanburg County.
"Illis is going to be a blessing
in disguise," said Landrum
police Lt. Terry Ducker.
Dialing 911 will not only
speed response to emergencies
by the police, fire and rescue
departments, but this will pro
vide more confidentiality for
callers giving tips or confessing
to crimes, Lt. Ducker explained.
Presently all calls made to the
457-3762 police number arc
aired on the police radios and
privately owned scanners. Ilie
result has been hindrance in
investigations, such as the
recent missing persons/murder
case of Angelia Brown, Ducker
said.
The new system will allow
citizens to contact the police
confidentially and just as
quickly without interrupting
on-going work, he explained.
Landrum residents already
pay for the Spartanburg County
911 system on phone bills.
Now they need to be educated
to dial 911 for the police.

Polk Central Bus In Head-On Collision
Tuesday afternoon around
3:30 a Polk Central High
School bus was involved in a
head-on collision with a care
on Hwy. #9. According to
eyewitnesses on bus #57, the
bus driver, Coach Larry Foster
took his eyes off the road after
making the turn from Turner
Road onto Hwy. 9, just north of
Peniel Road. He then crossed
the center line and collided with
a Dodge Colt, causing the bus
to swerve off the road and come
to rest in a ditch.
At press time, The Bulletin
has been unable to learn the
identify of the driver and his
passenger, who were both taken
to St. Luke's Hospital for treat
ment of injuries. Rescue Squad
personnel on the scene reported
that the two men were wearing
seat belts, which probably saved
them from more serious inju
ries.
Marcie Chaffin, who lives
near the accident scene, said she
heard a loud noise just as she
was leaving the house to meet
her son Andy, who was on the
bus. When she reached the end
of her driveway, she saw the
bus in the ditch and the students
exiting with the help of PE
teacher Cynthia Terrell, who
had come upon the accident,
and Coach Foster. By the time
Ms. Chaffin reached the bus,
the students were gathering in a
nearby field. She reported that
they were shook up, but non
appeared to be seriously
injured.
Her son, Andy said, "I was
sitting on the bus talking to my
friends when I heard a big
boom and felt a jolt. 1 look out
the front windshield of the bus
and saw the bus driver swerv
ing. I thought he'd blown a tire
or something, but he'd hit a car
