Drive-time radio listeners in Denver, Colorado recently had a chance to contemplate small town life while staring out their windshields at holiday traffic jams. It continues with such startling revelations as that the Bulletin is "full of small town news." Denise Henley, afternoon DJ of a Peoria radio station, called and did a pleasant interview with us, as did Modesto, Cal. and San Diego, Cal. on-air personalities. The hi-out-therc-in-radio- land award, though, goes to the "drive time" pair in Denver. In that hey-aren't-we-exciting voice, the one dude read the script. Lady Wolverines Win Classic Opener The Lady Wolverines won their opener of the Blue Devil Classic Thursday afternoon, defeating Swain 44-42. Polk's Jenny McGrane scored the first basket at the 7:16 mark. Swain went ahead 5-4 at the 4:38 mark. Leah Justice tied the score at 5 with a foul shot with 3:56 to go in the quarter. Swain tied it again at 7 at the 1:32 mark. The Wolverines pulled ahead 12-10 to the end first quarter scoring. Swain tied the score at 12 in the first minute of the second quarter. The Wolverines made a run on three straight baskets by Jenny McGrane at the 5:03 mark to go ahead 22-15. Swain was able to narrow the lead to three at the end of the quarter, giving Polk Co. a 22-19 half- time edge. Swain scored the first basket of the third quarter to make the score 22-21. Polk County pulled ahead 28-21 on baskets by Jenny McGrane and Leah Justice and free throws by Amy Dotson and Blythe Edwards. The Wolverines held Swain scoreless until the 19 second mark, ending the third quarter 28-23. In the fourth quarter, Swain closed the gap quickly on a basket and foul shot to make the score 28-26. Three scores in a row by Jenny McGrane and Neysa Callahan put Polk County ahead 34-26 with seven minutes left in the game. The (Continued On Back Page) Wolverines Lose A Heartbreaker The Wolverine men fell to Swain 75-74 in the closing seconds of the opening round of the Blue Devil Classic Thurs day afternoon. The first quarter was one of playing catch up for Polk County. Swain jumped out to an 8-2 lead with 3:59 remaining in the quarter. The Wolverines fought back with baskets by Otis Miller at the 3:26 mark and William Burnett at the 2:29 mark. Dwight Canady tied the score at 8 with 2:03 to go on foul shots. Swain pulled ahead again, ending the first quarter with a 13-8 lead. Polk County came roaring back in the second quarter, going ahead 14-13 at the 7:18 mark on a basket by Rob Phil lips. Swain took the lead again at the 6:37 mark, 17-14. Then, Otis Miller hit a three point basket to tie the score at 17 and it was all Polk County the rest of the quarter. Otis had another three pointer at the 5:25 mark, Larry Fagan hit three pointer at the 3:11 mark and William Burnett had a three pointer at the 2:43 mark to help put the Wolverines up by 10 at half- time, 42-32. The third quarter saw Polk County maintaining their lead until Swain held the Wolverines scoreless for the last three min utes of the quarter.
