Looking to 1992, our nation is struggling with recession and a loss of confidence. Suddenly we are realizing that Japan and Germany took the lead in world economic competition while we were investing in military dominance. Our production efficiency declined. Jobs went overseas. Our workers are poorly educated and unprepared for the work place of the future. It is interesting to look back to what was surely a golden era for inspiration in these times. N C 28782 New Arrival Susan and John Jackson of Landrum are parents of a son, John Robert, born December 12, 1991 at Mary Black Hospi tal, Spartanburg, S.C. He weighed 7 lbs., 6 oz. He also has 2 sisters, Elisabeth, age, 5 and Sarah, age 2. Maternal grandparents are Bobby and Irene Settle of Lan drum. Paternal grandmother is Mrs. Doris Jackson and the late Rev. Lawrence Jackson of Landrum. ASU Recognizes Former Tryon Student On Jan. 25, 1992, Greg Lair will receive recognition as a member of the Appalachian State University Mountaineers Championship football team. ASU, the Southern Confer ence Champion, participated in the NCAA Division 1AA play- offs. Greg, an outside linebacker, started as a special team player during the 1991 season. Ilie ASU senior letterman graduated from Forest Hills Higli School in 1988; he attended Tryon schools from 1980 to 1984. TUESDAY, DEC.31,1991 Women's Indoor Track Results The Polk County Lady Wol verines participated in an indoor track competition at UNC- Chapel Hill Dec. 20 and 21. Participating in the 600 meter dash were Pat McEntyre, who set a new school record at 1:42.15, Natalie Jackson, 1:49.76, Monica Ruff, 2:06, Tonya Cunningham, 2:13, and Kelly Sparks, 2:10. Karen Godlock took first overall in the 100 yard dash with a time of 2:52.9. In the 300 meter dash, Natalie Jackson ran a 45.2, Rhonda Burnett 47.02. Also participat ing was Traci Gilbert. Karen Godlock won first overall in the two-mile run, setting a new school record with a time of 11:35.9. Also partici pating was Jennifer Owens, who ran 16:47. Participating in the high jump was Tami Wilson, who jumped 4'8", which was also a new school record. Participating in shot put was Nicki Hulst. Karen Godlock was first ove rall in the mile run with a time of 5:18.36. Also participating were Pat McEntyre, 6:18 and Jennifer Owens, 7:47. Karen Godlock and Tami Wilson qualified for the next competition to be held in February. The coach is Steve Aldred. Read The Bulletin For Local News 20C Per t opx Using Well Water? Did you know that 51% of the residential dwellings in Polk County use well water for their water source? This year the Polk County Advisory Exten sion Council members identi fied safe drinking water as one of communities' main concerns. On Thurs., Jan. 30 there will be a special educational pro gram on well construction and maintenance, sponsored by the Cooperative Extension Service of Polk County. Dr. Ron Huff man, Extension Groundwater Specialist from N.C. State Uni versity will be in Polk County explaining how wells are con structed. He will also discuss what maintenance should be considered. The program will be offered at two different times, one at 2:30 p.m. and a second, repeated at 7 p.m. Spaces are limited and you must be pre registered to attend. Anyone interested in attending may pre-register by calling the Extension Center at 894-8218. —Community Reporter Landrum Civic League The Landrum Civic League will meet Fri., Jan. 3, 1992 at 3 p.m. at the Civic Center for the annual business and planning meeting.
