A reader called, actually sev
eral called, but one in particu
lar called Monday morning to
talk about President Franklin D.
Roosevelt.
On Friday, we published two
poems about FDR submitted by
another reader who said she
thought they would have some
interest during these hard eco
nomic times we're facing in
1992.
Well, she was right. The
interest we've heard about,
however, is largely outrage at a
the way the poems tear down
FDR's many accomplishments.
The reader who called Mon
day morning remembered the
Depression well, and said his
father worked for the WPA.
This reader pointed out that the
first sewer system in Columbus,
and the Stearns School's gym
nasium and rock wall - all were
projects of the WPA. People
were put to work, good things
were done.
I must admit that I was
unprepared for a strong negative
reaction to these poems when

Communication
To the editor:
The Curb Reporter comments
last Friday on Dr. Causby arc
both stirring and poignant but
they really miss the mark by a
rather wide margin. The ques
tion is not whether the Board of
Education should extend Dr.
Causby's contract but rather will
he honor a second contract
when he has shown he will not
honor his present one?
Has the Curb Reporter asked
himself - If Dr. Causby is such
an outstanding individual,
deserving of all praise and
honor why is he threatening Io
break his present contract with
Polk County at a time when
there are many important pro
jects in progress that need the
Superintendent's attention? Is
this the type of person we want
to place our trust in? One who
threatens to quit at this critical
time?
The prime question right now
is not whether Dr. Causby's
contract should be extended but
rather should he fulfill his pre
sent one which has a year and a
half to run. If he completes his
present projects satisfactorily
his contract can be renewed a
year from now.
Dr. Causby is quoted as sav
ing he will stay here if he
receives an appropriate exten
sion to his contract - by which I
presume he means in time, plus
salary increase and I suppose an
increase in perks and benefits
00 However there is no reason
to believe that a person who
