Dwight D. Eisenhower was in office, probably on the golf course as I understand it, when I was born. John F. Kennedy was shot in Dallas when I was just about the age my first grade daughter is today. Since then we've seen Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, and Bush lead America. Perhaps with the exception of Kennedy, no president of the United States, I believe, holds a particularly dear place in the hearts of my generation. But this week I learned that at least one president surely holds a place in the hearts of many my senior. I learned this after printing two poems, submitted by another senior citizen, criti cal of the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt. After reading these, one lady caller likened criticism of FDR to child pornography. "He was not quite a god," said a gentleman who visited the Bulletin offices. "Not quite a god. He showed people how much he cared..." Tears welled up in his eyes, and he choked (Continued On Back Page) TRYON. N C 28782 Causby's Contract Extended, 4-3 Vote Supt. James F. Causby's con tract with Polk County Schools was extended to June 30, 1995 in a 4-3 vote by the Board of Education during a special meeting Monday. Dr. Causby said he will with draw consideration of other jobs and said that his original request for a contract extension included no changes in his pre sent benefits or salary. Dr. Causby was a finalist for superintendent of the Nash County/ Rocky Mount school system presently undergoing merger. The position would have begun March 1. Dr. Geoffrey Balkam, Philip Feagan and Ann Whitmire voted against extending Dr. Causby's cunent contract which runs out in June 1993. Wayne Bradley presented the motion for extension which was seconded by Phillip Pleasants and supported by Chairman Georgia Pack and Vice Chair man Terry Edwards. Feagan said later that his vote was substantiated with reasons he expressed in executive ses sion, and until all those involved waive their right of confidence during executive session, he does not feel at lib erty to discuss the matter. Dr. Balkam said he would explain his reasons for voting against the contract extension in a media communication. That's how the talents of Laura Boosingcr, one of the featured performers to be pre sented on Harmony for Habitat, have been described. Laura resides in Weaverville, N.C., but has presented the tra ditional music of the Southern Appalachians from California to Connecticut and throughout Virginia, Tennessee and North Carolina. She uses several tra ditional instruments, banjo, guitar, dulcimer and autoharp’ and presents a wide variety of musical numbers... regional ballads, gospel music and fiddle tunes.
