Leonard was the subject of
some not-so-happy conversa
tion during Monday night's
Tryon Town Council meeting.
Councilmen were concerned
that none of the Bryan's Store
rioters were yet behind bars,
even those who apparently
assaulted police officers
responding to the scene.
Leonard stopped by the Bul
letin offices Thursday morning
on his way to Polk County
Superior Court, where he is
trying a tragic child abuse case.
He said Assistant District
Attorney Will Cathey has dis
missed some of the riot cases
after consultation with Tryon
Police Office Gail Nonamaker.
"She recommended that the
charges that could not be
proven be dismissed," Leonard
said. "Most of the dismissed
charged were 'cross warrants'
taken out by riot participants
on one another, each claiming
to be in the riglit. It is usually
impossible for a judge or jury
to resolve these 'swearing'
contests beyond a reasonable
doubt."

To Purchase Red Fox
On Courthouse Steps
Resolution Trust Corp.
(RTC), the savings and loan
bailout agency in charge of sel
ling Red Fox Country Club, has
been unable to reach agreement
with an intended buyer, area
residents say they have learned.
The RTC on Thursday could
not answer a reporter's ques
tions about the property without
first conducting a two-day
search. But Bob Bielaski,
chairman of the interim board
of The Club at Red Fox, said
his organization has learned
from its contacts within the
RTC that the intended deal with
Alan McCain has fallen
through. Recent letters to Club

Heading To State Finals
Seth Peoples, sophomore at
Polk Central, leaves today (Jan.
31) to participate in the North
Carolina Indoor Track Finals at
Chapel Hill. Peoples will com
pete in the two-mile run on
Sat., Feb. 1. To qualify for the
state meet, he ran the two-mile
in 10:07 at competition in cha
pel Hill on Jan. 17, also setting
a new Wolverine record.
Peoples will be accompanied
by Coaches Alan Peoples and
Steve Aldred and fellow track-
ster Karen Godlock. Godlock
will represent the women's team
in three events, the 1000 yd.

Landrum Jr. High
Wins Battle Of Brains
The first round of the 1992
Battle of the Brains was broad
cast by WSPA Radio, with Bill
Drake moderating, from the
Landrum High Media Center on
Wed., Jan. 22. Battle of the
Brains is academic competition
among the eighth grade students
of Spartanburg County, includ
ing 15 public schools and 3
private schools. The contest
runs from Jan.-May with $1500
in prize money awarded to the
winners in May.
Representing Landrum were
Frances Rountree, Karen
Bridges, and Matthew Burns as
team members with Angela
Arledge and Brian Greene as
alternates. Advisor is Mrs. Dec
Bunn. Representing St. Paul
Catholic were Jay Boggs, Ralf
Haring, Eric Espiritu with
Michelle Timago, Rob Eney
and Paul Szklennick as alter
nates. Advisor was Steve Cray-
craft.
After falling behind in the
early stages, the Landrum team
pulled ahead to win the game
54-43. Landrum will meet
Chesnee or Dawkins in March
for the next round of competi
tion.
