We talked with Superior Court Judge Julia Jones of Charlotte last week. She was the judge on the bench for the Sherry Hall Dyer child abuse case recently in Polk County. After the guilty verdict was handed down, Judge Jones sentenced Dyer to five year- s probation. 29th District Attorney Alan Leonard pro nounced himself "shocked" by the light sentence, considering that an Il-day-old infant had been permanently and horribly injured. But Judge Jones said she would make no comment on the case. "I do my commenting from the bench, based on what I hear," she said. After the verdict. Dyer's defense attorney, Susan Craven, reportedly asked the judge for leniency, while Leonard asked for the maximum 10-year sen tence. C 28782 Applications For Auxiliary Scholarships St. Luke's Hospital Auxiliary, continuing the health career support program it started in 1978, will again in 1992 award one or more scholarships to eligible local graduates. Application forms for the scholarships, which range from $500 to $1,000, are now avail able from high school guidance counselors and health occupa tion teachers. They must be completed and returned to the Auxiliary by March 1, 1992. Interviews will be scheduled of the candidates at a later date. To be eligible, a student must be a senior, have completed a health occupations course or served as a junior volunteer at the hospital, and be planning to study for a career in the field of health. Last year the Auxiliary awards, which totaled $3,000, were given to four students: Lesley Carter, now at UNC- Chapel Hill, and Gippy Hill, Deana Greene, and Jennie Blackwell, all of ICC-Spindale. Another $3,500 was given to previous awardees who are continuing on with their health studies. They are Michael Crater at WCU. Angela Bar nette at USC-Columbia, Stacie Jennings at Wofford and Sharon Jolley, Central Carolina Com munity College. Purpose of the meeting is to elect delegates to the County Convention on March 19. At the County Convention dele gates will be selected to the District and State Conventions.
