In Washington, D.C., the ratio
of lawyers to residents is one to
40; in Charlotle/Mecklenburg, it
is one to 284; and in Polk
County, it is one to 1,601.
What does that tell you?
The Asheville Citizen-Times
recently counted lawyers in 19
Western North Carolina
counties. According to the
study, Polk County has nine
members of the N.C. Bar Asso
ciation serving a population of
14,416. If we had Washington's
legal needs, we would have 360
members of the bar.

Pack Steps Down;
Whitmire Now
School Chairman
Georgia Pack stepped down
as the chairman of the Polk
County Board of Education
Monday, and Ann P. Whitmire
was unanimously elected as
chairman in her place.
"I'm tired, I'm ready for a
change, and I feel Ann will be
really good," Pack said as she
requested to step down as
chairman, taking the position of
vice-chairman.
Pack has served as Polk
County's school board chairman
for the past four years, and was
the Tryon City Schools school
board chairman for two years
prior.
Whitmire, school board vice-
chairman and former teacher,
has already attended two lead
ership conferences and, because
she is retired, she has more time
to put into working with board
members, Pack pointed out.
The school board voted
unanimously to accept Pack's
resignation and to install Whit
mire as chairman and Pack as
vice chairman.
"I, more than anyone, know
the time you have spent and the
work you have put into this
job,' said Supt. James Causby.
Whitmire assigned Pack to
serve on the Personnel and
Evaluation Committees.
