What's happening: The box office is open for Tryon Little Theater's upcom ing production of Come Blow Your Horn. The play takes the stage Thursday through Sunday. The Tryon Painters and Sculptors will host a slide show and lecture on The Age of the Marvelous today at 2 p.m. in the Mural Room of the Fine Arts Center. There will be training classes held for new school bus drivers tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Steams Education Center in Columbus, Room 201. The Concert Choir of Gard ner-Webb College will perform at the Pea Ridge Baptist Church Wednesday at 7 p.m. Steve Hardin Jr. of Pea Ridge and Tina Greene of Columbus are among the students in the choir. A World Day of Prayer will be held Friday, March 6th and will be observed locally with a service al Holy Cross Episcopal Church at 9:30 a.m. The Lake Lure Republican (Continued On Back Page) Dagget To Speak At EPIC Meeting EPIC (Education in Polk County is Crucial) wishes to invite all parents and interested persons to attend an open meet ing on Fri., Mar. 6, from 3:15 to 4 p.m. with Dr. Willard Dagget to discuss the changes which will be made in grading and assessment of student progress as the Polk County schools move toward an outcome-based education. The meeting will be held in the Tryon Higli Cafete ria. Also, on Sat., Mar. 14, the public is invited to join EPIC members for a guided tour of the new high school facility. Anyone wishing to attend should meet at Steams Educa tion Center at 3 p.m. It would be helpful in plan ning this tour if those wishing to participate would call Stearns Center, 894-3051 prior to Mar. 14. In case of heavy rain, this tour will be rescheduled. -Community Reporter Clarification An important point was left out of a report of St. Luke's Hospital Auxiliary's recent board meeting. St. Luke's Hos pital is now classified as an "assigned hospital" which means that no patient is ever charged for blood while in St. Luke's, only for processing. Read The Bulletin For Local News White Oak Terrace Resident Is 100 Suzie Vaughm bom March 2, 1892 in Clinton, S.C. daughter of Mattie Davidson and Thomas Richard Owens. Suzie was married to Claude Lawrence Vaughm in June 1917, in Clin ton, S.C. Her children are: C. L. Vaughm Jr. of Stewart, Fla.; Mrs. Dorothy Clary of Tryon; Mrs. Martha Milsap of Inglew ood, Fla. and Thomas Owens Vaughm of Chapel Hill, N.C. Mrs. Vaughm enjoys visits and cards from her 7 grandchil dren and 8 great-grandchildren. She has always had a great love for children and for several years operated her own kinder garten. She has previously taught music and elementary school. When asked how she felt about being 100 she stated that she never thought she would make it. Mrs. Vaughm has been active (Continued On Back Page) Slater Award Requests Are In Teachers in schools in Polk County and Landrum have sub mitted their applications for the Priscilla and Ellis D. Slater Awards to Promote Excellence in Teaching. Fund requests for teachers' projects total $30,825. Twenty-seven teachers from eight schools are taking advan tage of this opportunity to try for a grant to carry through some action plan to improve their classroom teaching. All applicants will be inter viewed Mar. 12 and 13 by the full Slater Award Committee, co-chairmen Lib Correll and John Lewis.
