The weather Tuesday, high

Someone repeated a statement
to me which I have heard sev
eral, maybe a dozen, times in
the last three years.
"You know politics in Polk
County..." they said, rolling
their eyes.
"That's why we just don't get
involved," the speaker conti
nued, after receiving the char
acteristic, knowing nod the first
statement always elicits.
Well, just what is this shared
experience that makes most
people shudder to think of Polk
County politics?
One answer, it seems, is its
strong tendency to label things
either entirely good or entirely
bad. Now what, beyond the
Almighty, do you know that
is of any importance to the
human experience which is en
tirely good or entirely bad?
Right. Nothing.
There is an ancient Chinese
story you've probably heard
about a farmer and his neigh
bors. The farmer's horse runs
away and the neighbors all say,
"Oh, how awful. You are a
simple farmer and you've lost
your most important animal."
