A "Jane Doe" wrote us March
10 to ask what reporters call a
"follow-up question."
"A few months ago the Polk
County Board of Education
voted to extend the superin
tendent's contract. Board
members (Phillip) Feagan,
(Geoffrey) Balkam, and (Ann)
Whitmire voted against the
extension. Why?
"It was reported in the Bulle
tin that both Balkam and
Whitmire would explain their
vote through the media at some
later date. Have I missed
something?"
No, Jane, you haven't missed
anything. Actually, Ann
Whitmire never said she would
explain. Phillip Feagan said the
reasons had been discussed in
executive session and he was
not al liberty to discuss them.
Geoffrey Balkam said he
would be writing a letter of
explanation, and probably
to answer strong criticism he
received over his handling of
questions regarding the matter.
But apparently, he has since
reconsidered. No letter has been
forthcoming.

Tryon May Allow
Mobile Homes In
Four Areas Of Town
Mobile homes would be per
mitted in four areas of Tryon
under a plan considered by the
Tryon Town Council Monday
night.
Those areas arc Capps Road,
Hwy. 176 across the Pacolet
River Bridge, Markham Road
near its intersection with
Livingston, and the Lyle Street
and Jackson Street Extension
area.
Mobile homes are not per
mitted within Tryon's current
zoning ordinance, and Town
Manager Matthew Dolge has
advised the council that state
law requires it to make some
provisions for all types of hou
sing.
Each area being considered
for mobile home uses is now
within Tryon's least restrictive
single family residential zoning
jurisdiction, R-4. Under the
plan considered by council, a
new classification would be
created, R-5, in which mobile
homes would be allowed as
"conditional uses."
Pliis means that landowners
could receive a permit from the
town to install a mobile home
on their properly.
No mobile home parks would
be allowed. Instead, mobile
homes would have to meet all
the requirements of the zoning
jurisdiction. Other than
allowing mobile homes, the
R-5 zone would maintain the
same standards as the R-4,

Rhett Butler Returns
Will Rhett Butler (Ronnie
Mossellcr) utter the immortal
"Frankly, my dear, 1 don't give a
damn," as he carries Scarlett
(Sue Hipps) up the stairs? Will
he carry her up the stairs? Can
you think of a better pair to play
Rhett and Scarlett in the Mel
rose Madness production on
Mar. 27 and 28? Their sketch,
"Gone With the Breeze," is one
of four Carol Burnett sketches
to be presented during the Mel
rose Madness evening at TFAC.
Liz Norstrom will take Carol's
role in "As the Stomach Turns,"
(a soap opera parody), while
Barb Halliday plays the klepto
maniac, Pam Thompson, the
hippie daughter, and Pat Mal
one, the nurse. Imagine Clark
Moffitt playing Andy Rooney
opposite Kirk Flynn's "Judge"
in "Return to Andy Hardy." A
take-off on "Love Story" will
complete this portion of the
program. Starring Patti Peake as
the dying girl, and Ronnie
