About 20 firemen from Columbus, Mill Spring, Tryon and the N.C. Forest Service were on the scene for two hours from 12:24 to 2:25 p.m. Columbus Fire Chief Geoff Tennant said that the fire came close to burning out of control. Had it crossed a ridge into some cut over land, it would not have been possible for Columbus firemen to stop it with their equipment, Tennant said. Tennant Resigns As Athletic Director Geoffrey Tennant, Polk County Schools athletic direc tor, and football coach Den nis Stokes resigned their posi tions recently. Supt. James Causby said he and the Board of Education decided that in order to attract a top candidate to Polk County they would need to combine the positions of athletic director and head football coach. "They made a decision I don't necessarily concur with, but I don't want to get a controversy started that will detract from getting someone to help these kids next year," Tennant said. Causby said Tennant offi cially retired a year ago and was working on a one-year, part- (Continucd On Back Page) Wesley Wolfe Wins 4-H Talent Show 4-H member Wesley Wolfe played a Civil War Medley to win "Best In Show" at the annual "4-H Entertains" Talent Show on March 14. His piano teacher is Pam McNeil Thomp son at Discovery House of the Arts, where Wolfe is a scholar ship student. Shown above at the Christmas Expo sponsored by Discovery House, Wolfe will go on to compete at the district level 4-H talent competition. He is in the ninth grade at Tryon High. Ethan Schulman (PC) defeated Lewis McDowell 11-9, Anthony Womack (PC) defeated Ed Hines 10-2, Hugh Finch (PC) defeated Howie Splawn 10-5.
