Dr. Bill Daggett gave a
45-minute speech to the board
of directors of the International
Center for Leadership in Edu
cation a few years ago. It was
off the cuff. He had no prepared
remarks.
However, 90 seconds after he
finished speaking the chairman
of the board sent helpers
up and down the aisles handing
out printed copies of Daggett's
speech, translated into four dif
ferent languages.
The International Center used
a technology which makes a
voice print to hard copy instan
taneously, uses a 500,000-word
spell checker, corrected Dag
gett's grammar, and translated
his meaning into foreign lan
guages - all instantaneously.
And what are they teaching
high school kids today?
Personal computers were the
hot new technology in 1982,
Daggett recalls. Now everyone
has them. FAX machines hit the
market in 1985. Now they're
facing stiff competition from
fiber optics.
With fiber optics, a person

At the indoor arena in Arden
this weekend, and Wed. through
Sunday of next week there will
be a top level Hunter Horse
Show, including some jumper
classes late in the day.
Admission is free, and the
horses are beautiful and tal

will be participating, especially
on the weekends, and would be
delighted to have some support
from "back home."
Take advantage of this oppor
tunity to see some of the best

World
Class Of '96 Chooses
OBE Courses Soon
In the next few weeks, Polk
County's rising 9th graders will
be asked to choose from a list of
courses unlike any their older
classmates ever saw.
It will be theirs, and Polk
County's, first step into the
brave new world of Outcome
Based Education.
Not only will Polk County
launch a new curriculum for the
9th grade next fall, but new
teaching, grading and schedul
ing methods for all high school
students.
Why change? Polk’s test
scores have risen. The county
earned high marks on the state
"report card". Why change
now?
Because the improvements are
not enough, educators say, not
nearly enough.
"How effective is what we're
doing now?" asked David Wil
liams, assistant principal of
Polk Central and Director of the
N.C. Center for Teaching
Tliinking.
"We are not producing gradu
ates who are thoughtful citizens,
ethical or motivated workers, or
dynamic, caring parents. Kids
are growing up in a non
thinking, sensory culture with

Heartworms Deadly
Did you know that Heart
worms in dogs can be pre
vented, treated and cured?
Before you start your dog on
the heartworm daily or monthly
pill, it is necessary and very
important to have your dog
tested with a simple and inex
pensive blood test at your vet
erinarian clinic. The vet can tell
you within minutes if the test is
negative, and the dog can start
on this medication immediately
and continue with "the pill" the
rest of his life. If you stop giv
ing "the pill" for a period of
months, then the dog must once
again be tested before the med
ication is begun again.
Heartworms come from the
bite of an infected mosquito.
The easiest and safest treatment
is for you to keep your dog on
