Thermal Belt residents are
running a sort of Operation Lost
Trust themselves these days.
Not the sting operation that
found S.C. state officials taking
bribes. They feel their trust in

According to one concerned
Tryon resident who wrote to us,
the council was given the Lake
Lanier Girl Scout Camp prop
erty in 1950 by Hoyt Prince.
He was well aware that many
families could not afford to
send their little girls away to
summer camp. He decided all
little girls in our area deserved a
chance to... learn to swim, learn
scout crafts, to be a part of Girl
Scouting.
So he deeded his lots on
Lake Lanier to the Tryon Girl

Retraining Teachers
The Key To Success
The new curriculum at Polk
County High School won't
mean diddly if teachers con
tinue to teach the way they
always have, educators say.
"The potential success of the
OBE (Outcome Based Educa
tion) program is going to
depend on teacher retraining,"
said David Williams, Polk
Central assistant principal.
Since January 1991, Polk
County's teachers have been
training and retraining.
A lot of money has come in to
support their efforts. In
1990-91, the Polk County
Board of Education allocated
$25,000 for staff development.
In 1991-92, another $30,000
was allocated, $45,000 was
donated, and nearly $50,000
was allocated by the state.
These funds were used to pay
teachers to work over thc sum
mer to develop the OBE curri

for substitutes to cover classes
so teachers could attend work
shops and conferences.
Polk County Schools have
applied to the state for an
$89,000 OBE grant. And many
of the teachers applying for this
year's Slater Awards have told
