Columbus Firemen Had Busy Morning Tuesday morning began early for the Columbus Fire Department. The volunteer firemen were summoned from their homes al 3:28 a.m. to respond to a call reporting a brush fire at the entrance to the industrial park. When they got there, they found it was a controlled burn. "I had some unhappy camp ers," said Chief Geoff Tennant. The firemen were back on the job at 8:25 a.m. responding to a wreck on Red Fox Road. Ten nant said Howard Ruffs truck had overturned and gasoline was spilling out onto the road. The firemen helped extricate Ruff, who was not seriously injured, and then righted the truck, Tennant said. Later that same morning, the firemen were called on to set up a landing zone for the MAMA air ambulance at St. Luke's Hospital. The helicopter was coming to transport a patient to Memorial Mission Hospital, and firemen always set up a landing zone in case of crash landings, Tennant said. Burglars Foiled At Dr. Woody's Tryon Police were investiga ting an attempted break-in at Dr. J.W. Woody's office on Carolina Drive Thursday mor ning. When office staff showed up Thursday morning for work, they found minor damage to the door knob and lock. But police said the burglars apparently did not gain entry. Correction A statement attributed to County Manager John Lewis in a report on the Polk County Economic Development Com mission meeting was apparently made instead by EDC chair man Glenn Rhodes. It was Rhodes who counseled the EDC members asking for zoning about the political rea- ^"Let's face it," he said. "If the board passed zoning, at the next election its members would be thrown out and zoning would be rescinded." LOST: Black Lab dog, male, no collar, answers to "Joe".
