Flash: The federal govern
ment may soon be in the busi
ness of tearing down billboards,
according to a story in The State
newspaper in Columbia, S.C.
The Federal Higliway Admi
nistration has ordered states to
tear down signs that don't con
form to local or state regula
tions. About 100,000 billboards
across the country arc going to
be coming down by 1994. The
federal government will help
pay to compensate the owners.
About one third of all bill-
boards, or 3,200, in North Car
olina could be removed.
According to an editorial in
the Charlotte Observer this law
may tap taxpayers' wallets, but
it "promises some relief from an
artificial horizon that comes in
chunks 30 feel high by 40 feet
long."
Just a piano player?: Dr. Fred
Whiskin has returned to Tryon
after six weeks filling in as the
acting director of the Wilson
Memorial Hospital psychiatric
unit. We may have thought of
Fred only as a jazzy piano
player, and not as a psychiatrist
but come to think of it, the two

their youngsters for kindergar
ten in the Polk County elemen
tary schools on the following
dates:
Friday, April 10 - Sunny
View; Tuesday, April 14 -
Mill Spring; Wednesday, April
15 - Green Creek; Monday,
May 4 - Tryon Elementary;
Wednesday, May 6 - Saluda.
Registration will begin at 8:30
a.m. in each school. On the
above dates, rising kindergart
ners will also be offered free
screening, including tests for
vision, hearing, language and
motor development, under the
direction of Ann Viehman,
diagnostician for Polk County
Schools.
Parents of rising kindergart
ners who have not received
registration information in the
mail should contact one of the
above schools.

Major and Mrs. Anthony Neal
(Tony) of Heidelburg, Germany
announce the birth of a son,
Shelby Sines Neal, born March
1. He weighed 6 lbs., 8 1/2 oz.
Mrs. Neal is the former Lori
Sines of Columbus, Ga.
Grandparents are Mr. and
Mrs. Bill Neal of Columbus and
Col. and Mrs. Kenneth Sines of
Columbus, Ga.

New Trustee
Donna B. James of Columbus
has been appointed to the St.
Luke's Hospital Board of Trust
ees.
"I hope to be a very positive
influence as decisions are made
for the provision of healthcare
to our community in the 90's,"
said James. "And I look forward
to working with the other trust
ees and the hospital administra
tion."
James brings a wealth of
knowledge and experience to
the local hospital board, having
served as a trustee for Greene
Memorial Hospital in Xenia,
Ohio for over 10 years.
Additionally, she served as
the Curriculum Coordinator for
Xenia City Schools for 20 years
before retiring to this commu
nity almost a year ago.
She completed her
undergraduate studies at Bow-

Seeks 20 Members
With 180 members on hand
an additional 20 new members
are needed so that the club at
Red Fox may bid for the Red
Fox Country Club property at
the foreclosure sale on Monday,
April 27.
If successful the new mem
ber-owned club plans to imme
diately add a swimming pool
and begin refurbishing the
properly.
