What's happening:
If your child will be entering
kindergarten next year in Polk
County, the schools are offering
a free get-acquainted program
for your child. The "Rise and
Shine" program will meet
at the elementary schools from
9 to 10 a.m. on Mondays at
Green Creek, Tuesdays at Mill
Spring, Wednesdays at Saluda,
Thursdays at Sunny View and
Fridays at Tryon throughout the
month of May.

Godlock Wins First
WNC Sports Award
Karen Godlock, Polk County's
state champion middle distance
runner, was recognized at the
34th annual WNC Sports
Award Banquet at the Grove
Park Inn Sunday.
Godlock won the Apple Tree
Honda Award for a female
minor sport athlete. Former
Bulletin editor Seth Vining Jr.
says Godlock is the first Polk
County athlete to win one of the
WNC Sports Banquet awards,
although others have been
nominated.
The Polk County girls track
team was nominated this year
for an award, but did not win.
The featured speaker at the
banquet this year was Mary
Wayte, an Olympic medalist
swimmer at the 1984 and 1988
Summer Games who now
serves as associate commis
sioner of the Southern Confer
ence.
Cogdell Named
LHS Scholar Athlete
Greg Cogdell, a senior at
Landrum High School, was
named the Scholar Athlete of
the Week by WLOS-TV 13.
The program is sponsored by
WLOS and recognizes Carolina
students who excel in both ath
letics and academics. Each stu
dent recipient films a short clip
that is aired on the 6 and 11
p.m. news on Channel 13. Greg
is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Bruce Cogdell of Landrum.

'Show Boat' Coming!
When Jerome Kern first
approached Edna Ferber with
his plan to turn her novel
Show Boat into a musical, she
was not only reluctant, she
thought he was out of his mind.
Only when he explained his
idea of a new kind of musical
theatre did she give Kern the
musical comedy rights. Oscar
Hammerstein was quickly con-
vinced of the feasibility of
Kern's plan and together they
put together an artistic and box
office triumph.
First presented in New York
in 1929, the story of the "Cot
ton Blossom", plying the
waters of the Mississippi, with
Cap'n Andy, his lovely daugh
ter, Magnolia, the fascinating
gambler Gaylord Ravenal and

Lanier Library
Annual Meeting
The Lanier Library tradition
ally invites the entire commu
nity to attend her annual meet
ing.
This year the date is Sunday,
May 17 at 3 p.m. in the Fine
Arts Center auditorium. Retir
ing president, Barbara Clement,
will open the 102nd meeting
welcoming visitors and library
members, continuing with a
brief business meeting. Three
new board members will be
elected and introduced to those
present.
Following the business meet
ing, program chairman, Helen
Stuart, will introduce Jean Pet
tigrew who will present Our
Scottish Heritage. She will
then unfold an array of Scottish
Heritage, U.S.A, (sponsor of the
Highland Games in Linville).
Will there be a bit of the piping
of the haggis, and whatever is
the skein dubh? We hope to find
out.
James Dall will demonstrate
and explain Scottish attire:
Flora McDonald Gammon will
speak about Scottish culture.
There will be singing by Mark
Parsons, Scottish dancers and
musicians to perform and a
good time will be had by all.
Wear your kilts, your tartans
and anything else Scottish you
can find.
Many people in the Tryon
area have Scottish or Scottish-
Irish ancestors. Whether or not
you share this heritage you will
enjoy the Lanier Library
