The Tryon Community Cho
rus will present its annual
Spring Concert Friday,
Saturday and Sunday.
The Town of Columbus will
hold a public hearing Wednes
day, May 27 for citizens to
comment on the proposed
annexation of Harold Burrell's
gas station/ convenience store
property at the entrance to the
industrial park on Hwy. 108.
The hearing will be held at 9
a.m. in Town Hall.
There will be a Gospel Sing
ing sponsored by the Polk
County Fraternal Order of
Police May 30th in Stearns Park
from 2 to 6 p.m. The concert is
free. Car raffle tickets are avail
able from F.O.P. members.
Duncan Scott will discuss a
unique school of thought
regarding the teaching of chil
dren during the Polk County
Friends of the Library program
May 31 at 2:30 p.m. at the Polk
County Library. Scott will talk
about Bruno Bettelheim, foun
der of the Orthogenic Schoo! at
the University of Chicago.

Carl Sandburg Home National
Historic Site, Flat Rock, has
received the Charles S. Mar
shall Award which recognizes
agencies for outstanding team
work in promoting and aiding
the historical, scientific and
educational activities of the
National Park Sendee.
The award was presented by
Eastern National Park and
Monument Association, a non-
profit cooperating association
that operates sales areas for
interpretive materials at many
land management agency visitor
centers.
Teamwork between the park
and Eastern National Park and
Monument Association was
evident in agency growth and
improvement, increased visitor
service and new product devel
opment.
The historic site was honored
for its accomplishments with a
plaque and a $1,000 donation to
the park's interpretive program.

Gift Of Watercolor To St. Luke's Hospital
Gary Page, a Landrum artist, exhibits to hospital representatives,
Thomas Bradshaw, President, to his left and Charles Dunn,
Director of Development, at his right, the watercolor that he was
commissioned to paint showing the front view of St. Luke's Hos
pital in 1992.
As the so-called "new" St. Luke's Hospital celebrates its 20th
year, Mr. and Mrs. Louis L. Pettit have given this watercolor that
will be displayed at the hospital and will be used for various pro
motional projects such as reproduction on mailing pieces and
postcards for sale in the Gift Shop operated by St. Luke's Hospi
tal Auxiliary. The postcards bear the inscription, "St. Luke's Hos
pital, 220 Hospital Drive, Columbus, N. C. 28722, Watercolor by

Griffin of Columbus has
recently returned from a tour
sponsored by the U.S. Depart
ment of the interior. The paint
ing was on display at the Wild
life West Festival at the San
Bernadino County Museum,
California and the American
Museum of Wildlife Art, Red
Wing, Minnesota. John's paint
ing will be included in the TPS
member show on May 31.
