The Cosmic Reporter Tycho Brahe (1546-1601)’ by Tim Linder Tycho Brahe was a well ^ stronom er of the late 15l)()s. He made many impor tant contributions to the world of astronomy and he was the last great astronomer of the pre-telescopic era. ®^ c was b °™ in 1546. In 1560, when he was 14 years old, he was so impressed by solar eclipse that he became interested in astronomv. In the latter half of the 1500's, Tycho made many important astronomical observations. HE built large and accurate instru ments with which he studied the movements of the planet Mars and made accurate measure ments of star positions. In 1572, Tycho made detailed observations of a supernova. These observations helped to prove that the stars lie beyond our atmosphere in a realm of stars that was previously thought to be unchanging. In 1576, Tycho set up an observatory on the island of Ven, which became the astro nomical center of the world. From this observatory, Tycho made the most accurate measurements of his time of the stars and planets. With his accurate instruments, Tycho was even able to measure the length of the year to within 1 second. In 1599, Tycho was appointed Imperial Mathematician by Emperor Rudolf II. Tycho Brahe died in 1601, leaving his observations to determine some of the basic laws of planetary motion. Kepler also used Tycho's observations to prove the Copernican theory of a sun- centered solar system. .
