BMW is proposing a plant which could bring as many as 4,000 jobs and an investment of $1 billion. Recent stories have reported that company officials have narrowed their list of potential sites down to Greer, S.C. and Omaha, Neb. Newcomer sent us a clipping from the Omaha Sunday World-Herald May 17 edition describing the same sorts of efforts on the part of Nebraskan elected officials and business leaders. The efforts of South Carolina officials are described daily in the Spartanburg and Greenville newspapers. Recent articles have cited as South Carolina advanta ges, lower wages, and a location (Continued On Back Page) Columbus Council OKs Burrell Annexation, Zoning Harold Burrell's gas station/ convenience store property on Hwy. 108 was officially annexed into the Columbus city limits and rczoned Wednesday by the Columbus Town Coun cil. Dr. Thomas Bolling voted the single 'nay' against both the motion to annex the Burrell property at the entrance to the county industrial park into the town limits and to rezone the property to highway commer cial. "I'm not in favor of picking spots here and there to annex," said Dr. Bolling. "If it were contiguous zoning, fine, but not to zone a spot here and a spot there for friends." Dr. Bolling reiterated that the only reason for Harold Burrell's annexation request is to sell alcoholic beverages. The two audience speakers at the hearing both objected to a business selling beer so close to the entrance to Polk County High School. Curtis Hutcherson said further that our society fights drugs, but alcohol is per haps a greater harm than other drugs. However, Robert Ormand pointed out that the issue before the council was not whether or not Burrell would be licensed to sell alcohol, but whether or not the property would be annexed and rezoned. Burrell will have (Continued On Back Page) Rhonda Burnett Awarded $24,000 Scholarship Converse College has awarded a $24,000 Excellence in Leadership Scholarship to Rhonda Burnett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald H. Bur nett of Old Highway 19, Columbus. The scholarship is based on academic excellence and leadership abilities while in high school. Burnett is a senior at Polk Central Higli School. She is a captain of the cross country track team and a member of the Drama, Beta and Spanish Clubs. Burnett is also a member of the Tryon Youth Center Board of Directors, Tryon Little Tlieatre, and her church choir. She is interested in pursuing classes in biology or pre-legal studies. Converse College, located in Spartanburg, S.C. is an inde pendent, four-year, liberal arts college for women. Care Givers Receives Accreditation Care Givers, a local private- duty nursing service, has received accreditation from the North Carolina Accreditation Commission for In-Home Aide Services, Inc. Effective July 1st, both fed eral and state law mandate that all in-home aide services be accredited and licensed by the state. Accreditation and licensor require an inspection and approval by the Division of Facility Services, under the jurisdiction of the Department of Health and Human Resources. Care Givers began planning for these new regulations last fall. In March the Commission conducted an intense two-day survey which consisted of reviewing policies, procedures and job descriptions and inter viewing administrative staff, employees and clients. The accreditation has been awarded for a three-year period ending April 30, 1995 and requires continued compliance with the Commission's stan dards during this period.
