The high temperature for the month of May was 89 degrees, reached on May 23, and the low was 38 degrees, recorded on May 9. The final rainy week of the month pushed the total rainfall over the average by .99 inches. Total rainfall was 6.85 inches for the month. So far this year, 28.05 inches of rain has fallen, 1.07 inches more than average. The Census Bureau has just released the median household income, education and poverty figures from the 1990 census. Polk County heads the list of North Carolina's 17 western counties when it comes to household income. Polk County has a median household income of $26,967, sliglitly above the state average of $26,647. The national aver age is $30,056. Trailing Polk are Henderson ($26,801), Buncombe ($25,847) and Transylvania ($25,179). Couch First Eagle For Troop 150 In Last Three Years Seventccn-year-old Walter Joe (Joey) Couch received his Eagle badge on May 19th in an Eagle Court of Honor at the Congregational Church in Tryon. Couch is the first member of Scout Troop 150 to achieve the rank of Eagle in three years. For his Eagle project, Couch spent a year studying city maps in order to locate all working fire hydrants in Tryon. Once these hydrants were pinpointed, he worked with other scouts in painting the "H" symbol on roadways to aid the fire depart ment in locating hydrants in time of need. Scoutmaster Mike Smith read an essay entitled "One Hundred Scouts", which examined the (Continued On Back Page) 25C Per Copy TCC Men's Golf Results The Men's Spring Handicap at the Tryon Country Club, a 36-hole event, at Medal Play with full handicaps, was com pleted on Sun., May 17, after a few rain delays. This was the first important men's tournament of the season at the club and was played in four flights. The 1st flight win ner was Jackie McFalls, with Dick Sikes the runner up. The 2nd flight was won by Bob Hastings, club president, with a tie for 2nd between Tom Burrell and Dutch Zandbergen. The 3rd flight was won by Bob Hunter with Bob Widdi- combe and Walt Flaschar tied for 2nd. In the 4th flight there was a tie for 1st place between Jay Foster and Seth Davis. - Community Reporter Play Reading Group Ilie TLT Oral Play Reading Group meets Wed., June 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the Mural Room.
