Polk County's government and civic leaders have been saying for quite some time that we better get on the stick and come up with a county-wide land-use plan, because "the times they are a' changin'." Polk County's Schools have already faced increased student populations which have man dated re-organization of school facilities. Even before BMW announced plans to build its first U.S. production plan in Spartanburg County, the number of working adults moving into Polk County had increased. We're still a popular retirement area, but commuting workers and new businesses are finding their way here in increasing numbers. As Tryon/Thermal Belt Chamber of Commerce Pre sident Charlie Neff said in yes terday's Bulletin, Polk County's Land-use Planning Project is being developed at just the right time. Now's the time for county residents to make known their priorities and goals for such planning, as the Polk County Commissioners, the Economic Development Commission and (Continued On Back Page) Faulkner Qualifies For November Ballot Ken Faulkner will run as an unaffiliated candidate for Polk County Board of Commission ers in the upcoming November election. The Polk County Board of Election met Wednesday mor ning to confirm Faulkner's ballot qualification based on petition signatures in excess of the required 4% of registered voters, reported Dale Edwards. The petition was signed by 532 registered voters, she said. Only 427 signatures were needed to qualify Faulkner as a candidate. "I have no special platforms; I just certainly want to take time before jumping into something new," Faulkner said later that morning. "It's a conservative feeling that I have." The petition to put Faul kner on the ballot was instigated by Faulkner's son-in-law and others, he said. Faulkner never asked for a single signature, he added. Though several people earlier asked Faulkner to run for County Commissioner, he turned them down, he said. But when these people asked if they were able to get his name on the ballot as an unaffiliated candi date through petition, would he run, he said he would consider it, Faulkner said. Ross Perot has become an unaffiliated presidential candi date in much the same way. Post Offices Announce Closing The Tryon, Columbus and Lynn Post Offices will close at 12 noon on Friday, July 3 and reopen Monday July 6 for business as usual.
