N.C. 28782 'Kiss Me Kate' And Shakespeare Although Brush Up Your Shakespeare is one of the songs in Kiss Me Kate, auditions for which arc being held at TFAC Friday evening, July 10 and Saturday afternoon, July 11, Debbie Goode, who is directing the presentation for Tryon Little Theater, says that a knowledge neither of Shakespeare in gen eral nor of The Taming of the Shrew in particular is a prere quisite for those interested in auditioning for one of the many roles in the musical comedy. Kiss Me Kate is the story of a recently-divorced actor and actress who are paired as the leads in a touring revival of Shakespeare's lively comedy, The Taming of the Shrew, and whose backstage bickerings gradually increase as carry- overs into real life from the shrewish and woman tamer roles they play on stage. The play-within-a-play device utilized in Kiss Me Kate is not new in theatrical history, though it's not often that playwrights have been auda cious enough to fall back upon Shakespeare in using it. In fact, Shakespeare himself has a play-within-a-play going on in his original version of The Taming of the Shrew.
