Red Fox Bid Winner
Visits Over Weekend
The apparent high bidder for
the Red Fox Country Club was
in town over the weekend to
inspect the property.
Tony Jackson, Red Fox club
professional, said Gene Hol
brook of Kannapolis, N.C. was
in town to inspect Red Fox.
Holbrook is the owner of
Home Realty Co. in Kannapo
lis, but a worker there said he
spends most of his time in
Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Holbrook was unavailable for
comment, as were real estate
agents handing the sale for the
Resolution Trust Corp. (RTC).
After a foreclosure sale April
27 failed to bring a buyer, the
RTC's agent, Hatfield Phillips
of Atlanta, began accepting
sealed bids. Bids were opened
July 3 and the winner was
announced last Friday.
Jackson said he had not talked
with Holbrook and was unsure
what plans he might have for
Red Fox, should he decide to go
through with the purchase.
However, Jackson said he
believed Holbrook has his own
partner who will manage the
club if the purchase takes place.
A group of local buyers, The
Club at Red Fox, is waiting to
see if the sale actually takes
place before disbanding. If the
sale does not take place, the
local buyers will try again to
purchase the club, William
McLennan, membership and
communications director, said
Friday.

Childhood Memories of Thousand Pines
Edward O. Douglas of Ghent, N.Y. still recalls his summer in
Tryon and the wonderful innkeepers at the old Thousand Pines
Inn. He retells his story in a story inside today's Bulletin. Above,
he is pictured with a playmate from that summer in Tryon.
McKaig Wins TCC Club
Rodney McKaig won the
Tryon Country Club men's
championship trophy despite a
sweltering sun and adversity
that would have cracked most
golfers Sunday.
McKaig and three other men
were neck and neck at the turn
Sunday. He had shot a 37 on the
first nine, while Bob Murray,
Fred Edwards and Tommy
Bunell each had shot a 38. That
put him one shot ahead of
Murray and two shots ahead of
Edwards and Burrell in the
second day of stroke play.
He erased his lead, however,
with a double bogey on No. 10.
He had bogeyed the same hole
Championship
earlier that day. No problem, he
kept his head up.
On No. 11, McKaig hit a fine
drive, then topped his second
shot dropping it into the creek.
Time to start breaking clubs,
ri glit?
No. McKaig said he simply
took his drop, hit onto the green
and dropped a putt for par.
"I give the credit for my win
to playing smart," McKaig said.
"1 never did get upset. I just
played two smart rounds. I
could easily have shot an 85. I
just didn't let anything get to
me."
McKaig said the Tryon
