By Monday morning, another .2 inches of rain had fallen. Art Champlin of Tryon has been following the recent Curb discussions of animals' ability to navigate. He was recently in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park slaying at an inn in the mountains on the Ten nessee side of the park. A bear and her three cubs were the talk of the inn guests and staff. Apparently the bears had become too casual around humans, digging through the dumpster and even trying to make their way into the indoor swimming pool. So park rangers captured the bears and moved them clear across the 520,000-acre park, over the mountains into North Carolina and released them. Guess what? Three weeks later they were back at the same dumpster having break- fast. (Continued On Back Page) TRYON, N.C. 28782 Red Fox Buyer Once Played For St. Louis Browns Gene Holbrook, the man who has a contract to purchase Red Fox Country Club, once played for the St. Louis Browns minor league baseball team. But he left baseball. It didn't pay enough- In the four decades since then he has made plenty of money as a developer in Cabarrus County, northeast of Charlotte. Enough that he said he doesn't plan to take a salary from Red Fox Country Club once he owns it. Closing should take place sometime around August 1st, he said in an interview Monday from his office in Myrtle Beach. Holbrook has been in Colum bus a lot recently, meeting with the Red Fox Property Owners' committee and members of The Club at Red Fox. He said he has described his plans to them: club members will not have to pay new initia tion fees to continue as mem bers; the course will be refurb ished; and Holbrook hopes eventually enough members will join to take Red Fox entirely private. But as he described his plans, which he said he will first unveil in detail for members at a dinner sometime after closing, Holbrook said he met some skepticism. Arts Council. -Community Reporter Local Equestrian Olympic Connection Local riding instructor Annette Murphy has four for mer students competing for Bermuda in the Olympic equestrian events in Barcelona. Peter Gray, riding on the 3-day Event Team, is the most experienced, this being his fourth Olympics. He has also been on two Pan Am Games teams, winning team and indi vidual medals. Annette taught Peter through his Pony Club years in Ber muda, where she was Chief Instructor, culminating in his achieving his Pony Club A rat ing in England. M.J. Tumbridge and Nicola Desousa were also members of the Bermuda Pony Club for several years. M.J. is now based in Maryland and has been very successful with two Advanced Event horses.
